JACKSON — Gov. Haley Barbour is expected to sign a bill giving DeSoto County supervisors permission to build a new jail outside the county seat of Hernando.

The Mississippi House and Senate passed a bill Friday allowing supervisors to build the jail anywhere within DeSoto County.

An earlier opinion from the attorney general's office had said the jail must be within the boundaries of the county seat.

Supervisors chose a site just outside Hernando, but officials said that because of legal fees, it would be expensive for the city the to annex the site.

The bill is House Bill 2.
