JACKSON — Lawmakers will return to the Capitol next week to consider an incentive package for a $500 million economic development project.

Gov. Haley Barbour announced an Aug. 27 special session on Friday.

Barbour says in a news release the project will have locations around the state and create 1,000 direct and indirect jobs through the company and the local suppliers.

Barbour says additional details about the project will come later.

Click here for story from this morning's NEMS Daily Journal by Bobby Harrison on what special session may be about.

maybe the state could look into the counties and cities that are not zoned and regulated, and get some proper inspections done for safer homes and buildings to live in and work. Start up a contractors board for licencing in the state for professional people and stop people, that can "spell it I can be one". (elect, plumbers, hvac.) etc.

I sure hope the session has nothing to do with bio fuels. That venture would be just too risky for the tax payers money.

virrob2, and I think that thinking is part of the problem. Neither Haley, Bush or FEMA should be responsible for rebuilding people's lives after a disaster. Oh yeah it is nice to get money and housing but is it really their responsibility? Nor do I want my tax dollars going to bail people out of life's disasters. Living in that zone is a choice and it is not like people don't know what is coming eventually. They absolutely know a hurricane is coming and they rebuild again and again. That is no ones problem but theirs. That is what insurance is for. Blaming politicians for a hurricane is BS. There is no one that can handle a situation like that too suit everybody.

I REALLY hope The Gooberner runs for president. Not only will he make a fool of himself, but maybe that Bloomberg reporter will again start looking into his dishonest background and all the crooked dealings around Katrina and expose him for the crook he is.

He's buying jobs with our money for $500K each so that he can crow about creating jobs in his campaign for president.

Haley doesn't do anything unless there is something in it for Haley.

To americasgone, go down to Biloxi and drive over to Waveland on hwy. 90. Be sure to look at all the new homes and businesses that Haley was responsible for rebuilding on the north side of the highway. Then tell us what a great job he did after Katrina. I will admit that he did much better that the mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Louisiana. He never criticized the president or FEMA at all.

Is this the same governor that less that a week ago said the bill that provided federal money for education was a “terrible bill”? The same governor that now says it will save 2000 jobs in education. Is this the same governor that now wants a special session to “consider an incentive package for a $500 million economic development project” to create “1,000 direct and indirect jobs”. As WTFDude stated, $500,000 per job.

Is this the same political party that has criticized every economic stimulus bill in Washington and voted against it including the education bill?

I wonder if I could get a half million to hire a person to do some work around the house?

DFWSpiderman, I find it telling that you only posted personal insults and made no remark about his ability. He handled Katrina better than any else in the country. At least give him credit for that.

And there are still people around who think this fat, slow-talking, mush-mouthed hick would have a chance to receive the Republican presidential nomination.

I heard Haley was able to get a joint "Just for Men" production facility to open close to the new "Bosley's Hair Replacement" office. It's a WIN/WIN for Haley.
