Starkville Academy, winless a year ago, pushed Class 2A runner-up Ackerman to the limit on Thursday night.

The Volunteers lost 8-6 in overtime after holding the home team scoreless in regulation.

"We are just real proud with the effort tonight," said first-year Vols coach Jeff Terrill, the former ICC head coach. "I'm a bottom-line guy, and the bottom line is, they just had us outnumbered."

His team led 6-0 after a short scoring pass from Kylen Henson to fellow senior Ryan McKelly, but the Vols missed the point-after kick.

Ackerman, 15-1 a year ago, responded with a TD - on a fourth-down play - and a two-point conversion.

"They were pretty much knocking on the door all night," Terrill said. "We gave a tremendous effort, especially on defense."
