HATTIESBURG — Hattiesburg has joined the growing numbers of Mississippi local governments banning the sale and possession of synthetic marijuana known as "spice."

Four out of five Hattiesburg City Council members voted Monday at a special-called meeting to implement the ban.

The ordinance makes illegal the use, purchase, possession, distribution, sale or offering for sale inside city limits of several products usually marketed as incense.

The Hattiesburg American reports the ordinance carries a penalty of up to six months in jail and up to $1,000 in fines, and prohibits four different chemical makeups.

Petal passed a similar ordinance last week, and the Forrest County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing Aug. 19 on a ban of the substances.
