TUPELO – Workers put the final touches on the East Main Street water tower renovations Tuesday, more than a year after the city first approved funding for the project.

The council first approved a $39,000 allocation to rehab the iconic tower in June 2009, and it added an additional $12,000 to the project earlier this year.

Engineers first inspected and repaired the inside and outside of the structure, which was built in 1955 but is no longer in service. A work crew then spent months repainting it. A 10-foot-tall logo of a guitar was applied this week.

The guitar is significant because the tower sits atop a hill that was rumored to have been a favorite sitting spot of Elvis Presley when the famous entertainer was a youth in east Tupelo.

“In two days, they should be completed and the whole project will be done,” said Tupelo Water & Light Manager Johnny Timmons.

When the golf-ball-and-tee tower was built, it was the first of its kind in the area.

But the city took it out of service years ago. Since then, the aging structure has slowly deteriorated from lack of routine maintenance.

Members of the Presley Heights Neighborhood Association have long sought to restore it. But the painting and repair are just the beginning. Future plans call for a walking trail and landscaping around its base.

It seems to be a constant trend of funding pet projects (wants) while neglecting long term issues (needs). Its really annoying when more often than not, you read the local news and another study contract has been awarded or we have some ridiculous project being considered. In the "old days" a municipality could get away with these kinds of things, hiding it in a budget somewhere but, in my opinion, even when the economy returns to a more growth oriented model, we need to make sure our politicians are held accountable for how they spend taxpayers money...americasgone mentioned using money to extend services to annexed properties but I myself have been trying to get the drainage around our property fixed for over 20 years, right here in Tupelo. Meanwhile, our property has lost about 25 feet to erosion and our back yard chainlink will barely stand up on its own anymore...Hey, aren't we spending money to fight Lee County for MORE property to annex?

Why didn't they spend that money to extend city services to areas the city has annexed in the past and has failed to bring up to "city standards"? The city wants to annex more land and this is how they spend tax dollars.

I was kinda thinking along the same lines. Taxpayers spent how much to fix something that isnt used ? I'll bet it goes alot higher than $51,000.00. I bet it still isn't useable.

Maybe it could be the bus stop for the east Tupelo folks.

$51,000?

By the reasoning used to justify spending $51,000 on an old water tower, it follows that we should pay for Priscilla Presley Wagner to have plastic surgery and get a guitar tattooed on her butt! At 65, there are probably some repairs needed to the inside and outside, as well. Elvis spent 13 years with her. The same amount of time he spent in Tupelo.
