TUPELO – Incumbent Court of Appeals Judge Donna M. Barnes' re-election campaign could get a political boost Wednesday when Gov. Haley Barbour comes to town on her behalf.

Barbour appointed then-Tupelo attorney Barnes to the court in 2004 and she won election unopposed in 2006. This year, she faces Tupelo attorney Kelly Mims on the Nov. 2 ballot.

Today, Mims officially announced his campaign through an e-mail. A recent federal elections report shows Barnes has raised more than twice as much as he has, and Barnes with considerably more cash on hand.

In a joint announcement today, Barbour and Barnes will host the private campaign reception at the Tupelo Furniture Market.

Court of Appeals District 1 includes 22 counties, or parts of them, across North Mississippi.

In Mississippi, judicial candidates do not run under party labels.
