MANKATO, Minn. — A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that Brett Favre has informed the Vikings he will not return to Minnesota for a second season.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team had not made an official announcement. The person says the 40-year-old Favre called coach Brad Childress to say his injured ankle is not responding as well to surgery and rehabilitation as he had hoped.

Favre also told the Vikings last year he wouldn't play for them but ultimately changed his mind and joined the team immediately after it broke training camp.

Favre injured his ankle in the NFC championship, which the Vikings lost to the New Orleans Saints.

I think that Farve showed last season that he can still hang in there with the big boys if he wants.

But if he doesn't think that he can play at the level that I'm sure he expects of himself, then my hat's off to him for recognizing that and retiring.

I salute Favre for all he has accomplished and I'll respect and appreciate whatever decision he makes.
