OXFORD – The highly publicized pursuit by Ole Miss of former University of Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli could be closing in on a successful conclusion.

The process took a significant step Friday morning, as Masoli began an official visit to see the Oxford campus. Masoli spent Friday with both academic and athletic personnel, according to sources. He can spend maximum of 48 hours on campus, per NCAA rules.

Masoli, who was dismissed from the Ducks’ program after two run-ins with police in the last six months and has one year of eligibility remaining, acknowledged the visit on his personal website (jeremiahmasoli.net). It was Masoli’s first public comment regarding a possible transfer destination.

“I’ve been invited to visit the Ole Miss campus this weekend and flew into Oxford Friday morning,” said Masoli, according to his website. “I’m excited to explore the opportunity to enroll in a graduate studies program and play football this fall.”

The one-time Heisman Trophy candidate applied to graduate school at Ole Miss earlier in the week, and while Masoli hasn’t officially been accepted, it’s may be merely a matter of reviewing all the proper documents before that’s accomplished.

Masoli would be eligible for competition under NCAA rules that say a player who has earned a bachelor’s degree and has remaining eligibility may transfer from one Football Bowl Subdivision school to another and be immediately eligible if the second school offers a specific graduate program that his original school doesn’t.

Masoli is pursuing enrollment in the parks and recreation management graduate program at Ole Miss. He completed a bachelor’s degree in sociology at Oregon.

Newly-hired assistant strength and conditioning coach Junior Soli – who played for Houston Nutt at Arkansas – reportedly picked Masoli up at the airport for his visit, according to sources. Soli’s hiring and Masoli’s recruitment are unrelated, however, Soli’s presence on the staff has likely been used as a positive selling point – due to both being Somoan.

ESPN.com reported on Wednesday that Oregon coach Chip Kelly had heard from six other head coaches asking about Masoli. But, since Ole Miss began recruiting Masoli, no other school has publicly expressed interest in the San Francisco native.

Nutt denied interest in Masoli last week, but communication picked up after quarterback Raymond Cotton announced he was leaving the Ole Miss program last Saturday. Cotton is transferring to South Alabama, leaving only two scholarship quarterbacks on the Rebels’ roster.

Sophomore Nathan Stanley enters the fall as the Ole Miss starter, and junior college transfer Randall Mackey joined the program during the summer. Mackey will likely also have different roles with the offense – including slot receiver and operating the “Wild Rebel” formation.

Masoli – a two-year starter with the Ducks – was the second team All-Pac-10 quarterback in 2009 and led Oregon to two bowl berths, including the Rose Bowl last season.

"If he wants to smoke pot, that's his business,"

If it is against the law it is everybody's business. Glad to see our local gay rights, pro pothead is still on top of things.

Romans 3:9-20

Basically, all of us, whether insiders or outsiders, start out in identical conditions, which is to say that we all start out as sinners. Scripture leaves no doubt about it:

There's nobody living right, not even one, nobody who knows the score, nobody alert for God.

They've all taken the wrong turn; they've all wandered down blind alleys. No one's living right; I can't find a single one.Their throats are gaping graves, their tongues slick as mudslides. Every word they speak is tinged with poison. They open their mouths and pollute the air. They race for the honor of sinner-of-the-year,litter the land with heartbreak and ruin, Don't know the first thing about living with others. They never give God the time of day.

This makes it clear, doesn't it, that whatever is written in these Scriptures is not what God says about others but to us to whom these Scriptures were addressed in the first place! And it's clear enough, isn't it, that we're sinners, every one of us, in the same sinking boat with everybody else? Our involvement with God's revelation doesn't put us right with God. What it does is force us to face our complicity in everyone else's sin.

Okay, so he was suspended for the 2010 season following a guilty plea to a burglary charge - He was suspended but not dismissed, so Oregon gave him a second chance.

Then he was kicked off the team after being cited for marijuana possession during a traffic stop after he blew his second chance with Oregon.

So now, Ole Miss is giving him a third chance, huh?

How much slack should we cut one guy to allow him to do something that most would love and appreciate having even one shot at doing?

I hope the Ole Miss kids lock their stuff up tight because it's usually the case that once a thief, always a thief!

So, is Ole Miss going to give this guy a scholarship?

If so, that's a travesty and a slap in the face to all of the HONEST kids struggling to attend college.

If he wants to smoke pot, that's his business, but I can't stomach liars and thieves!

I'm noticing some new members posting on every article about Masoli. Either there is a very large increase in the number of people who comment and follow the University ariticles, or there are a few readers making the same comments under different names. I think it's just one or two guys mad that Masoli chose the University. But maybe there are some new fans of teams like Florida & Tennessee that now follow Ole Miss?

Anyway, no real news lately. PA may be able to dig up something when he returns next week. I hope Stanley has a great season and we only play Masoli until 2nd half of the cream puff games.

While the actions of Masoli do not set a good example for those to follow...there is also the principle of forgiveness.

Masoli shouldn't be tossed in the trash bin for mistakes made by a young man. Granted he should be on probation based on his actions..but he should also be given the opportunity for redemption.

Without being given a chance...he could very well go deeper into the trouble from which he looks to be attempting to escape.

Just saying.

Check your sources. Junior Soli played for Jack Crowe and Danny Ford. NOT Houston Nutt. Idiots

When are coaches gonna step up and not let these thugs in their schools. If you get two strikes at one University and they dismiss you. You should not be able to play again in College. This is a prime example of why the kids do the things they do. No problem going to play at another University. I thought Ole Miss had more class, maybe it's just Houston Nutt with no class.
