Park Ranger Ashley Ball tells The Daily Corinthian that next to a statue of a soldier at the site, a trio of rifles stand on end with their bayonets crossing in the air. Those bayonets have been broken off.
She says one piece was found resting on the trash can near the park entrance; the others haven't.
Ball says the Park Service believes the entire rifles will have to be recast and replaced. The cost is unknown.
The contraband camp replicates a village where freed slaves sought refuge with the Union Army after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862.
