COLUMBUS — The north Mississippi city of Columbus is considering a local ban on texting while driving.

Mayor Robert Smith and council members have asked the city attorney to research the issue and present some possible options for an ordinance.

The Commercial Dispatch reports that officials plan to call a public hearing to gather residents' ideas before voting on a ban.

Columbus councilman Joseph Mickens says banning texting while driving is "a no-brainer." He says he'd also like to prohibit people from driving while talking on cell phones.

A state law enacted in 2009 bans young people from texting while driving.

Talking on the phone is not the danger. It is TAKING YOUR EYES OFF THE ROAD TO PUSH BUTTONS that is dangerous. That being said, I don’t know how any law aimed at texting can be enforced as most people will simply keep the phone in their lap to text if they know that the police might be watching.

Don't give them an idea. They will ban driving period to solve these and the energy crisis.

Of course the select few will not be included.

Well if you are going to ban talking on the phone while driving you need to make sure the police follow the law to. I have driven past many squad cars with the officers talking on the phone. What is the difference between a phone and radio? They both are distracting.
