CORINTH - The Corinth School District announced Wednesday that Corinth elementary school students in grades K-4 will move into the new school on Droke Road in mid-October after construction delays pushed the completion date past the July 23 date set in the original contract.

Kindergarten through fourth students will begin school on Aug. 9 at their former schools: kindergarten and first-graders at West Corinth Elementary and second, third and fourth-graders at East Corinth Elementary.

Fifth and sixth grade students from South Corinth Elementary will move into renovated space at the former Corinth Junior High with seventh- and eighth-graders to form Corinth Middle School.

A partial school day on Oct. 14 has been set as the start date for the Corinth Elementary School move-in.

All students will be off Oct. 15 and 18 for faculty and staff to make the move, and the first day of classes at Corinth Elementary School will be Oct. 19, with students resuming classes at Corinth Middle School and Corinth High School on that date also.

The approximately $14 million elementary school was funded by a $12 million bond issue that was approved in early 2008.

Two busloads of teachers toured their new 128,000-square-foot facility as construction proceeded in mid-June, when they saw the layout for the 60 classrooms, computer labs, cafeteria, gymnasium and other facilities.

The school is being built on a 40-acre site on Droke Road between South Harper Road and South Parkway.

Road widening of Droke Road has been under way for several months, and a new roundabout intersection at Droke and Harper Roads is planned.

However, the city of Corinth approved an extension on the road project, where completion is not expected until November.
