MSMS student wins Merit Scholarship

- Lindsay Carroll of Belden was among 1,900 students in the U.s. who recently were announced as additional winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities. These Merit Scholar designees join more than 2,800 other college-sponsored award recipients who were announced in late May.

Carroll, who graduated from Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, received the National Merit Washington University in St. Louis Scholarship. Carroll's listed probable career field is biomedical engineering.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their winners from among Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years or undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

ICC students place at leadership event

- Several Itawamba Community College students placed in the Health Occupations Students of America leadership conference June 22-27 in Orlando, Fla.

Students who attended placed in the top three at the state leadership conference earlier in the year. They include Saundra Morelock of Rienzi and Bethany Fitts of Pontotoc in pathophysiology, Melba Guyton of Aberdeen in health care concepts, Jana Mize of Pontotoc in nutrition and Jenifer Fleming of Houlka and Stacy Smith of Amory in career health display.

Guyton placed second in health care concepts and Mize was in the top 10 in nutrition in the national competition. Advisers Nena Scott of Tupelo and Lori Little of Nettleton also attended.

ICC schedules second adult learner orientation

- Registration is under way for an adult orientation session at the Itawamba Community College Tupelo campus on South Eason Boulevard.

The session will be held on July 27 from 3 to 7 p.m. It is designed for adult students to become familiar with ICC and register for fall semester classes. Highlights of the session include meeting with an academic counselor, registration, discussion of ACT and placement scores, financial aid application, fees, ID card and yearbook photos, as well as campus tours. Presentations will focus on how to choose a career, how to be a successful student, the GO2ICC Portal and Blackboard and a general information session. Child care services will be provided.

TMS receives School of Excellence Award

- Tupelo Middle School received the School of Excellence Award for Arts Education from the Mississippi Alliance for the Arts on May 7 at the Mississippi State University Riley Center.

Milam teachers receive

Master Certification

- Milam Elementary teachers Kathryn Marcy and Leigh Ann Hopkins became the first teachers in Mississippi to earn Mimio Master Certification. Mimio Master is a program designed for dynamic teachers who are using Mimio technology in the classroom.

In three courses, the Mimio Masters program connects teachers with other avid Mimio users and develops their competency with the interactive technology.
