I am very surprised, but grateful that there were not many accidents during this rain. It was coming down in sheets. We got stuck at a Tupelo restaurant waiting for the rain to slow up. As we waited, we watched cars just racing down Gloster St. not even slowing up. Some of the water they plowed through kicked up higher than the top of the SUVs. Amazing how people drive during storms.

More from John about his run home after the flooded car incident:

@johnoxford1: The run home was something out of a movie. I had my golf shoes on that were inside the car and my pants tucked in my socks.

Scanner: TPD says the flooded car situation around the library is under control. Says one of the cars was stuck in a mud hole. Said the water is now down enough so the car can be driven away if the driver goes slow.

The registered driver lives in Highland Circle.

Scanner said Memphis Weather Service called TPD and advised that we should expect four inches of rain during the next hour.

Reminder from NWS:

MOST FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES. NEVER DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY.

FLOOD WATERS ARE USUALLY DEEPER THAN THEY APPEAR. JUST ONE FOOT OF FLOWING WATER IS POWERFUL ENOUGH TO SWEEP VEHICLES OFF THE ROAD. WHEN ENCOUNTERING FLOODED ROADS MAKE THE SMART CHOICE...

TURN AROUND...DONT DROWN.
