TUPELO - A pair of teens has claimed top prize in a contest aimed at keeping kids off drugs and alcohol.

Tupelo High School graduates Bryan Scribner and Tyler Pirkle made a 30-second video, "Swerving Down Memory Lane," that will begin airing on Mississippi television stations sometime after Thursday.

The pair competed in a contest sponsored by Sober Choices of Lee County, which was created by Region III Mental Health Center.

"When we first heard about the contest we immediately knew that it was for a good cause," Scribner said during an awards ceremony Tuesday at the Lee County Sheriff's Department.

Plantersville Middle School students Adreonna Hair, Essence Cato and Justice Gates won second prize for "It's Your Future."

"This gave an opportunity for students to do something for their peers," said Onessia Mosby, who worked with more than 20 Plantersville students for the contest.

Facebook members can do a search for Sober Choices of Lee County to see all the videos. Winners were chosen by people who voted for their favorites at the site.

Amanda Wilson, director of Region III MHC, said she's looking forward to more competitions in the future because of the strong participation this time.

"As a parent you talk to your kids about not drinking," said Jan Hillen with Region III MHC. "Sometimes they might not listen to the parents, but may listen to someone else."
