JACKSON – A benefit concert is planned this month in Woodstock, N.Y., for Constance McMillen, the lesbian teenager who sued her school district over its policy banning same-sex prom dates.

Rock singer Ronnie Spector will headline the June 25 concert at Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, and all proceeds will go to McMillen’s college education fund and the ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and AIDS Project.

McMillen filed suit in March against the Itawamba County School District when a school prom was canceled after she asked to bring her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.

lady_in_black: Well said, and very correct.

Sandlot: You force your beliefs down other's throat when you support rules and regulations and laws that support YOUR religious beliefs and deny others the freedom to practice THEIR beliefs. That's the nub of it. I have read the ENTIRE Bible, and beyond that, I have studied what many scholars say about what is in the Bible. The Bible was written over a period of about 1,500 years. The last book was written about 2000 years ago. The world was NOTHING then like it is now. And you're trying to tell others how to live using a book that goes back 3500 years?

There are many GOOD things in the Bible. But having been written so long ago, it needs interpreting and explanations. Evangelicals reject this and accept the Bible word for word, which is why they are so wrong about so many things. The point is, you can define sin in a lot of ways, and practically everybody has different ideas about what is a sin and what isn't. You are trying to tell me that things I do are a sin, which I believe are not. What I'm asking is that you quit telling me I'm a sinner about things that are not clearly defined in the Bible. As you yourself say, we will BOTH have to stand one day before God, and HE will let us know how well we did :) And I don't need YOU in the meantime to play God for me. Thank you.

And liberals have done MUCH good for society. Liberals rescue society from the morass and stagnation that conservatives would keep it in. Without liberals pushing for changes in our laws and society, we would still have slavery, women would have no rights, mentally ill people would still be locked in prisons, and people would be put in jail because they couldn't pay their bills. Do you really want to go back to that?

@pondering1, you obviously have not read the definition yourself. If you had you would not have made your last post. I will save you the trouble thought. The definition of the word fetish, as it appears in the dictionary, is :1) object thought to have magic power 2)object of irrational devotion. If you will notice there is no mention of sex in the defition.

As for the man stealing and wearing the soiled diapers, he is crazy and no one is trying to take away his right to wear soiled diapers. Although he may have some trouble with the law for the stealing part. But the fact that you are trying to compare someone's mental state with someone standing up for their right of free speech and choice, is truly the perfect example of stupidity.

msladybug...I forced NOTHING down anyones throat. I just told you how it is. I myself am a sinner--but I dont try to rationalize that MY sin is okay simply because it is MY sin...(thank you "mommy") :) and further, if you think homosexuality is a 'natural orientation', then you haven't read much of the Bible...just saying...

LOL..and beaver..equating bisexuality with the fight for equal rights? Laughable...Bilge? Hilarious...you're a bit oversensitive me thinks...and yes, I do have an opinion and am not afraid to express it. However, maybe you should refrain from these boards if you're going to go ballistic like this? LOL

"Pondering", although I think we are generally on the same side, you need to chill a bit...yes these liberal ideogies are destroying the very fabric of our country but some folks have no sense of how society deteriorates with every single new idea that liberals devise...

I am a Christian/sinner and a conservative and I readily admit that I am a poor example of a Christian. However I do still defend the Christian principles I aspire to and I NEVER try to defend blantant sin. Homosexuality is BLANTANT SIN and anyone who defends it is defending sin. Hey, YOU will have to answer to that not me. I have enough to worry about for myself....As always, when I pray, I pray for ALL people...there is still time and hope for us sinners hopefully...but not if we can't even ADMIT to what sin IS....

Talk about stupidity. Pondering, you are the classic example of the kettle calling the pot black.

Yes. It's been proven that a gay person brought AIDS to this country originally, and that it spread through the gay population first. That is history and proven fact. However, it wasn't acquired through sex with children, but with other adults (in Africa) who had the disease. However, AIDS is not a gay disease. It spreads even more rapidly in the Heterosexual population. It was in the news today, in fact, did you know that one in every eight persons in South Africa has AIDS? And it isn't the gay people who have it. Husbands, wives, and children. Do you know why AIDS is so prevalent in Africa? Because social customs among most Africans prevents them from using protection against the disease, such as condoms. If they use condoms, they are not a MAN. Tribal and religious customs are what's spreading the disease and killing the people of Africa. So quit blaming AIDS on gay people; AIDS was around a long time before it was brought to America.

I said it before but apparently you can't comprehend: Wearing diapers, assuming you don't need them for medical reasons, for sexual gratification or not, is a FETISH. And even if he is getting his sexual jollies from wearing them, it has nothing to do with homosexual or heterosexual orientation. His civil rights are not denied if he can't practice his fetish because it doesn't involve interaction with other people.

Some people DO like to have sex with children. They go to places like Thailand to do it. I too think this is horrible and immoral, and I do not condone it, approve it, nor do I do it myself, nor would I. It is illegal, and people caught doing it are prosecuted and jailed.

BTW, what questions didn't I answer? I'm pretty sure I answered all that were in your post.

msladybug& beaver ,

the two of you must have been home schooled under Charles Manson your ignorance is exceeded only by your stupidity.you couldn't answer the questions.neither of you got the part about applea & oranges. You mean to be rude and so do I.

The man didn't get sexual gratification from stealing diapers but from wearing them.his sexual prefrence is to dirty diaper as sex with some one of the same sex is to a homosexual. And is it realy less healthy considering homosexuals are still spreading AIDS? Some still don't know that male homos brought ADIS to this country by going to countries where they are allowed to have sex with small chrildren. Why would they go to other countries they can have sex with adults here? where's the legality in this?

ladybug: "No one should complain about HER whining. If you were told that you couldn't wear something or do something because of your sexuality would you not fight for you're right to do so"?

At this point in time...No. I am old and I pick my battles. LOL.

Whining does not become anybody at any stage in their life. State the complaint and leave it to the courts. Don't keep hammering it out in the newspapers.

Heck I guess I am older than I thought. I get sick of looking at Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and their family, among a few other celebrities.

It used to be that sexuality of any form was kept in the bedroom. Nobody knew anybody's sexual preference or anything else that people do in their bedroom. It really is nobody's business at all. But for some strange reason, people feel this need to megablast their sexual preference to the public. That is not needed.

I like Clinton's approach of this when he was prez. Don't ask, don't tell. It solves a lot of problems.

beaver, McMillen may be news, but she is old news. We know her complaint, she is taking it to a court of law, and that is where it should be solved.

As for the yankee discrimination organizations, LOL! Thanks for the concern, but don't bother. I've grown a very thick skin in the 30 years I've lived here. I've just used that as an example that I could whine about it if'n I took a notion to. We as humans can find all kinds of reasons to complain about something. The courts get tied up with all kinds of nonsense.

beaver,

Throughout this and other topics many have said things like NY does this, CA does that, MS is backwards and not up to speed with these other states, etc etc.

Simply put, if NY is doing it this way and broke, I don't want it.

For some reason it appears having a benefit in NY on this topic is suppose to be some kind of grand happening to some.

As to the split, it is just another poor soul that is being used by the ACLU. Why do I care ? I hate to see folks used for the benefit of others.

Pondering, I'm not trying to be rude, but consider what you posted. This is a FETISH, not a natural orientation that has to do with sexual gender. This guy has a problem--an urge to do something that IS totally unnatural to 99.999 percent of everyone. It is also dangerous, as he exposes himself to germs and bacteria both to himself and people around him. It also involves illegal activity, as he is apparently stealing the soiled diapers. One does not have to accept what this guy does in order to be "with the times".

In other words, this has NOTHING to do with sexual orientation. It has been estimated, depending on who you ask, that about 10% of all people are either homosexual or bisexual. That is a significant part of all of us. Science is saying more and more that this is a natural phenomena, IOW people are BORN this way. Religious people, using a 2000 year old book, and misinterpreting what it says, are trying to deny gay and bisexual people their rights to choose their sexual partner and live as they please. I dare say that if you were yourself gay or bisexual, you too would see the injustice of this.

But please don't compare someone with a fetish to homosexuals and bisexuals. They are NOT THE SAME THING!

Incidentally, there are LOTS of different fetishes out there. Most are benign and harm no one. Some people like to dress up in leather, both for public wear and during sex. (Don't include motorcycle riders in this group; they wear leather for VERY PRACTICAL reasons.) Some fetishes are more "kinky". And some are what most of us would find disgusting! Again, most fetishes are harmless, and involve only the one person OR a consensual partner(s).

Pondering....the fact that you are comparing her sexual preference to a man that steals dirty diapers and wears them is completely absurd. I personally see no connection between the two. You're argument there is pointless.

Imbroke...I didn't say that you were hating on her. Yes, the Barretto children are going to need psychological help. But, as far as Constance goes, a lot of these appearances that she is making is being set up by the ACLU I would assume. They are going to put her out there for every little bit of money they can get. That's how they work. All she was trying to do was protect her civil rights. No one should complain about HER whining. If you were told that you couldn't wear something or do something because of your sexuality would you not fight for you're right to do so?

I would ask those who think they are "with the times"What about the man who was caught stealing dirty and used diapers? He said he liked to wear them in his free time.

should it be OK to wear them to the prom? Is his sexual perversion any worse than any homosexual perversion? If so why? Should he be rewarded like the homosexauls often are? In his mind his apples are as good as your oranges. So where do you stand on this issue?

i'mbroke, you are reading the story because the Mighty Daily Journal sees it as a newsworthy item. Neither I personally, or the ACLU, or Constance herself decides what gets published in the paper. It's NEWS. As to people who discriminate against Yankees, I agree it's wrong, and I sympathize. I don't know of any support groups for that problem, however. If I hear of any, I'll pass the information on.

straightnonsense, what are you talking about? What does NY being broke have to do with this? As to who gets the money, it's stated that Ms McMillen will get some and the ACLU will get some. What the split is I don't know. And why do you care?

beaver: I'm broke, suzanne, you can't compare the Barettos and their situation to Constance McMillen. The Barettos are CRIMINALS, and there are organizations set up to help in that situation. Please quit trying to confuse the issues--it's like comparing apples to oranges.

Beaver, msladybug, you missed my point completely. There is not an ounce of hate in my post about Constance. I don't give a rat's behind about her sexual preference or if she gets to wear male clothes. As far as I am concerned, it is really a non issue to me. Let her wear men suits, tuxedos, anything she wants. IAHS handled the whole shebang very badly. However, It gets very, very old opening up the paper or going to the website to see yet another story about her feelings being hurt when I see that little children were tortured. My feelings get hurt at times, I deal with it. Are there any organizations around who take Yankee's under their wing when some small town southerners get up in their face to tell them how much they hate yankees and to go back up north? Yeah...there are still some of them around.

You say there are organizations set up to help in the children's situation? Well, the ACLU is likewise an organization that is helping Constance. They need to quit shoving her into our faces. Let her take her education money and go on to school. I wish her a happy life. Just don't want to see anymore articles about her being a lesbian who was denied the opportunity to put on a tuxedo.

NY is broke. Can't pass a budget. Is looking at shutting down government.

Yep we need some of that progress.

That aside, there should be plenty available to attend. Don't think they will.

The old theory of the one making the most noise isn't going to work on this one. Let them make all the noise they want. Most of the money will go to the ACLU anyway, not the girl. Thats what usually happens.

Thank you Beaver that was well spoken.

Tupelomommy, I wasn't belittling anyone. I am just tired of hearing these people that say that they are Christian sit and taunt and think what Constance has/will do is wrong. I am a Christian myself. But, 99.9% of the people in Itawamba County sit on their high horse and say Christian that and Christian this when they do stuff that shouldn't be done according to the bible themselves. So yes, him continuing to spew stuff about her being un-Christian because she is a lesbian is ridiculous. As I said on another post on a different topic, my sister cannot even go to school in this county without people threatening her life. I will never put my daughter through that type of torment. I went to IAHS myself and faced the same thing. It's not something wrong with Constance. I think there is something wrong with the School itself.

hiplady, that is as asinine a statement as I've ever read here. If no one in the world ever attempted change because it would cause trouble, there would never be progress made in society. Ever. What if the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. decided he "couldn't handle the heat"? What if those who fought slavery in the mid 19th century America decided they didn't want to stir up trouble? For that matter, what if women in American had not agitated for the right to vote? NOTHING is ever accomplished without first being opposed. As to Constance moving out of the county, she did so because she was reviled and even threatened. She and her family are just one small group in the county. What would YOU do?

Sandlot, you continue to spew your religious bilge. As msladybug says, you have your opinion and you are entitled to it, please quit trying to shove it down everyone's throat. Yes you do. Ms McMillen is being honored for the stand she took in the face of adversity, just as others, including Dr. King, were by the organizations that supported their causes. True Christians don't spread hate for those who disagree with them.

I'm broke, suzanne, you can't compare the Barettos and their situation to Constance McMillen. The Barettos are CRIMINALS, and there are organizations set up to help in that situation. Please quit trying to confuse the issues--it's like comparing apples to oranges.

msladybug,

1. you are right, there shouldn't be taunting.

2. you are wrong. sandlot never "shoved" his religion down your throat. it was an aside comment. On top of that, true Christians share their faith with others. How else could other people know the hope that lies there? If you don't like it, then say so. Don't belittle just because you disagree. You want Christians to do the same for Constance, don't you?

Ok, i'm done with my soapbox. :)

she couldn't handle the heat she should not have started all this, her moving out of the county. if she would have stayed then i would see her fight. this all really started when a guy wanted to dress in a dress. look back in the archives of the paper and see what i am talking about. i am hoping at least she will show up with her girlfriend this time.

Sandlot, the situation may have been controversial and un-Christian in your book and that is your opinion. But, it is however extremely un-Christian like to taunt and heckle her the way the students and people in this town did. That is why she is no longer in the area. I hate it when people go waving religion in other people's faces. If you were so Christian you wouldn't force it down other people's throats.

Ladybug? Valedictorian? Now where did you get that little morsel of excrement? I know people close to this and that has NEVER been said. And if it was true, which it isnt, that didn't keep her from it...her inability to handle a terribly controversial (and un-Christian) point of view would have been the cause. The girl isn't even a lesbian so as she keeps collecting ill-gotten-booty, people with real need (as i'mbroke stated) are struggling with REAL and more serious issues. If this girl wants to play this game and milk it for all its worth, thats her business...its a shame organizations such as this gay/lesbian group are filling their calendars with tripe such as this while they could be giving to organizations that fight the kind of devient behavior leveled at children that causes many of them to turn to sexual deviency in the first place? Other than the fact that it would adversely affect their "membership" in the long run...May God bless and help those of us who strive to rationalize sin...
