INGOMAR – Zach Carnell didn’t have to go out of his way to seek advice on a particular school recruiting him.

His Ingomar High basketball coach, Norris Ashley, is an alumnus of Delta State University, the same school that showed heavy interest in Ashley’s 6-foot-8, 240-pound center.

So when it came down to choosing a college to play for, Carnell figured he couldn’t go wrong with the Statesmen.

“It made it easier with Coach Ashley actually being an alum of Delta State,” Carnell said of the winningest high school coach in Mississippi. “He was always bragging about it.

“It has to be a pretty good school with the way he came out.”

On Wednesday, the Ingomar senior and Daily Journal first-team All-Area selection signed his national letter of intent to play for the Statesmen.

He averaged 23 points and 13.5 rebounds per game this past season for the MHSAA Class 1A state champion Falcons.
