TUPELO – Bond was set at $500,000 for a man accused of overpowering a female guard and breaking out of the Lee County Jail Tuesday morning.

Sheriff Jim Johnson said Richard Lewis, 18, of Verona, was captured in the employee parking lot of the jail after he overpowered a female guard, took her uniform and wore it out of the building. Johnson said Lewis was able to cause an electronic door to malfunction to gain access to the guard, who was watching the inmates. The guard suffered minor injuries.

He was found in the parking lot shortly after leaving the building.

Lewis is being charged with felony escape, simple assault on an officer, kidnapping and attempted felony taking of a vehicle.
