Second Chance Prom hailed as success

TUPELO - Saturday's Second Chance Prom drew more than 300 people to the BancorpSouth Arena, said Matthew Sheffield, communications director for Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition.

The prom, organized by the coalition, was intended to give lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth a prom in which they felt safe to be themselves.

"It was very successful," Sheffield said. "We had a great turnout."

Itawamba AHS senior Constance McMillen and Wesson Attendance Center senior Ceara Sturgis both attended. McMillen had sued her school to be able to attend prom with a female date and to wear a tuxedo.

Sturgis was left out of her high school yearbook after she wore a tuxedo for her picture.

I can't speak for VictoriousUnion, but as for me, being fat, snaggle-toothed and dumbassed is not the issue (although it frequently goes along with it), nor is the amount of your credit card debt. The issue is your prejudice and bias and hatred towards anyone who doesn't agree with your personal opinion of what qualifies you to be a Christian. Don't try to tell me that your view=the Bible view. The Bible is a large Book, and it says many things, and yes it contradicts itself quite a bit. If the Bible were perfect and easy to understand, why are there hundreds and hundreds of different religions?

The last book of the Bible was written about 2000 years ago. When we read it today, it needs to be interpreted and put into context of the customs and language of the period. When this is done, what often appears to be a plain and simple statement actually means something entirely different. This is where Fundamentalists usually go wrong. They take everything written in the Bible at face value.

So when you read the Bible verses condemning homosexuals, you are not understanding what you are reading. You read the words without comprehending the meaning or intent behind the words. Perhaps this is why there are numerous passages in the Bible urging us to study diligently the Word of truth.

Taking personal delight in the notion of someone burning in Hell is exactly what Christ wants of you Fundies, right?

How sad! Wouldn't it be nice if Fundamentalists actually worshipped the same Christ as other Christians?

straightnonsense, you may have a cross, but it certainly doesn't resemble the cross of Christ.

If you think fear, hatred, and paranoia are Christ-like qualities, then you need more than prayer --- you need psychiatry.

People like thebeaver show just how weak their beliefs really are when they think only government can be responsible for enforcing them.

Isn't that sad? I'd hope you people had greater things to worry about in your lives than whether or not a high school student brings a same-sex date to prom. But, it seems you don't.

No wonder why Mississippi continues to be at the back of the bus for every demographic --- especially in K-12 education. DEAD LAST for three years straight! Be proud, Mississippi!

In order to make myself clear let me say my question relating to what McMillan wore and who she took was two fold. One was the joke about what Jack Reed was wearing in Court on another topic. The other was if she was so intent on wearing a tux and taking a female partner to satisfy her prom desires, did she actually do it ? She filed a lawsuit over it, was at a gay event, so she should have been comfortable to satisfy her desires.

When McMillan brought these issues up in a lawsuit, on national TV, in the media etc etc, they become fair game and she will have to endure that. You don't go pick a fight, get your butt whipped and then hope no one will ever remember it or mention it again.

Should McMillan decide to close this part of her public life by dropping the lawsuit and stopping public appearances etc, I am sure the other will eventually go away. Her choice.

Losersunion, your fangs are showing again and you don't even know what you are striking at. My cross is brillantly light without fire. It is warm to the touch and soothing to the heart. Yours on the other hand may have fiery flames that burn when they touch you. That may be a preview of what you seek after death on earth. Happy smoking !!!!!

Janga deposes and says: You are not listening. When YOU make the choice to PUBLICLY expose areas of your life...YOU take the responsibility for how it will be perceived and that area is FOREVER open because YOU let it out.

Ms McMillen didn't "stand up for her rights"...she willingly exposed herself to public scrutiny and perpetuated the problem with her chosen venue of publicity. This young lady needs direction. She is continually making one bad choice after the other and, in my opinion; being mislead by others. Ms McMillen is involved in things way over the head of a teenager in High School. Don't kid yourself, she had everything to lose and those "selling" her in public have nothing to lose and will have not interest in her once she is used up.

No doubt everyone, including myself, has things of which we are not proud...but as Momma used to say, "Let sleeping dogs lie".."Wake up a mean one and there is a good chance you'll get bit."

"Don't start nothing, and there won't be nothing."

You know, Janga, I can imagine there were very similar statements made oh, say, about 50 years ago. Only then, they were addressed to "Black People". Black people who white people wanted to be kept "in their place". The ONLY way that Blacks gained their civil rights was by standing up to those who tried to hold them down. And it worked, although it took a long time and many suffered and died in the struggle.

Gay people are only doing what they MUST in order to gain their civil rights and acceptance by "the man". You, sir or ma'am, are on the wrong side of history in this struggle. Learn from history--don't repeat it.

The Bible tells of people that cannot tell the difference between right and wrong and their place in a lake of fire as this place here will be the only heaven they will ever know. Revelation 21:8 states that ALL will have their place in the lake of fire. No need to do anything but read the actual words to know where this prom is helping them go.........

You do not understand what I am saying here. I do not hate or even dislike Christians. I consider myself a Christian. However, your idea of what a Christian is differs widely from mine. You see absolute laws and a God that waits with a giant whack-a-mole to strike anyone who violates the slightest of the law. I see a God that recognizes each of us as children that He created, with individual needs and wants and expectations. He makes us all different. Did you ever sing the song in Sunday School, "Jesus Loves the Little Children. All the children of the world. Red and Yellow, Black and White, all are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world." Constance is one of God's children. Accept it or not, believe it or not. So who are you to judge her?

Yes, I know the Bible too. No need to quote Romans Chapter 1 to me. It doesn't apply to me. It was written about those who REJECTED Jesus. I have not rejected Jesus. As Victorious Union wrote in a different thread, Fundamentalists do not see Jesus as other Christians do. They seek only to find fault with and condemn others. This is why they quote verses like Romans 1. They consider that everyone who doesn't believe as they do are sinners. They try to raise their own standing by pushing down others. Christianity is not a "zero-sum" game. There is room for all at the cross. You don't have to put others down in order to get there yourself.

those comments were crass but very little moreso than things that vicariousonion and you say beaver....Onion just hates anything about Christians and this is just an excuse for her to attack us. By the way, you might read Romans chapter 1...it sums up ALL that we speak of including trying to make God's truth into a lie....THAT is what is happening here...

nutcase wrote thusly: I too wondered what everyone was wearing and why not a red carpet preview for Constance?

Maybe she's actually NOT the "attention whore" people like you think she is. Maybe she just wanted to have her prom and be herself and not make a public spectacle of herself, and in all likelihood avoid the onlookers and possible protesters.

Janga, just because a person goes public with one area of their life should not mean that their entire life is on public display. And as far as Constance making bad decisions, well that is a matter of opinion. Being gay may be a bad choice for you but for her it may be a good choice. Just like I may choose to become a part of the wiccan religion in high school and you may choose to be a Baptist, my choice would be bad to you and yours would be bad for me. Constance seems to me to be more of a adult that most of the faculty members in Itawamba, because she is making her own decisions and dealing with the results of those decisions. You might wish to try it sometime.
