Flood damage strains Corinth theater budget

CORINTH – Volunteers have been finding new places for water to hide at Crossroads Playhouse.

“It feels like the more we do, the more we find. We’re still finding large amounts of water,” said Kelly Gilson, artistic director of Corinth Theatre-Arts. “We have these tubs that hold costumes. We opened them and they were filled with water.”

The May 2 rains flooded the playhouse on Fulton Drive with about 30 inches of water, Gilson said. That’s put a strain on CT-A’s finances.

“We’re already on a shoestring budget,” she said, “so this is really tough.”

To offer assistance to the playhouse, send an e-mail to corinth.theatre.arts@gmail.com or do a Facebook search for “Corinth Theatre Arts Flooding.” CT-A’s number is (662) 287-2995, but power has been intermittent since the flood.

Some costumes, props and scenery have been thrown away, but CT-A is trying to salvage as much as it can.

“We could use help with laundry. Everything’s got to be cleaned,” Gilson said. “Some things need to go to a dry cleaners.”

There’s also a need for cleaning supplies, as well as new electrical strips with multiple outlets.

“All of our electrical strips have been damaged,” she said. “We actually had a fire earlier this week that started in one, and then it went up the wall.”

In addition to equipment, Gilson said Crossroads Playhouse needs tender loving care, and any volunteers would be welcome.

“We want to make sure it will be safe for people to come in,” she said. “We don’t want it to just be a cosmetic clean.”

Since the damage, the cast and crew of “Comedy of Errors” have rehearsed at Hampton Inn, Walden Street Church and Real Life Church.

“They’ve been great,” Gilson said. “It’s been a wonderful exercise in community giving.”
