The Mississippi State backup quarterback has left the team, BulldawgJunction.com reported Tuesday. He joined the Bulldogs last August after a three-year minor league baseball career.
A team spokesman would not confirm the departure, but coach Dan Mullen said during a Road Dawgs Tour stop on Tuesday that he and Stegall had talked.
Stegall (6-foot-2, 195 pounds) was a standout at Greenwood (Ark.) High School and signed with Miami to play football. But then the New York Mets selected him in the seventh round of the 2006 draft. They released him last June.
Stegall exited the spring as MSU’s No. 3 QB behind junior Chris Relf and redshirt freshman Tyler Russell.
