JACKSON – Legislators today sent to the governor a measure that would increase the amount of money that state employees and teachers contribute toward their retirement.

The bill, supported by Gov. Haley Barbour, calls for an increase from 7.25 percent of their pay to 9 percent.

Senate approval of the measure came today in a special session called Thursday to deal with the issue. The House approved the bill Thursday.

The increase would take effect July 1.
