STARKVILLE — The city of Starkville will require people to wear helmets while on bicycles, inline skates, roller skates, skateboards, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles.

The Starkville Daily News reports that the board of aldermen voted 4-3 Tuesday to adopt the ordinance.

The city held three public hearings on the proposal.

The ordinance will take effect in 30 days and would allow a six-month grace period.

In recent weeks, the cities of Ridgeland and Hernando have adopted similar helmet requirements.

june: You're right. But if you get a ticket in Tupelo if you know Robert Hall, you can just call him and he'll get it fixed for you. Or if they take you to jail, he'll let you go.

Of course he couldn't write you a ticket or arrest you, but he could let you go. :)

Really? They have time to concern themselves with this right now when they have had three apartments go up in flames since the end of last year? The City of Starkville needs to be devoting every resource it has to that problem, if you ask me.

But Dude and TupeloJoe - as far as helmets in Tupelo? I would not be shocked if wearing a helmet was not suddenly a requirement. Then if you break the law by not wearing a helmet, you may receive a citation, which equals revenue for the city!!

tupelojoe81: I agree with you.

Helmet laws should only apply to kids, not adults. Adults should be able to choose whether to wear a helmet (bike or motorcycle) or not.

A number of other states do not require adult motorcycle riders to wear helmets provided that they carry a certain level of PIP (Personal Injury Protection) insurance.

dumb......Tupelo better not think about it. Casual neighborhood bike riders dont need this crap. On a main road, sure wear one, but otherwise, dont force me to wear one.

Do you have to wear a helmet at the skating rink? No, whats the difference? No cars?
