JACKSON — Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour says he wants lawmakers to be cautious with taxpayers' money when they return next week to work on the state budget.

The Republican governor issued a revised set of budget recommendations Wednesday, six days before the legislative session restarts after a three-week recess.

Most agencies would take significant spending cuts under Barbour's plan — some as high as 16 percent.

Officials are trying to agree on a $5.5 billion spending plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Barbour says his budget would make a relatively small cut to education spending, but Cecil Brown, the Democratic chairman of the House Education Committee, says Barbour's plan for public schools would be a disaster.
