The City Council voted 7-0 to adopt the policy, which will require sidewalks and bike lanes be considered on all major street projects.
The plan was first pitched to the council Feb. 3 with the backing of Mayor Jack Reed Jr. But council complaints about certain aspects of the plan prompted changes.
One change allows the city and developers to avoid adding sidewalks or bike paths to a road project should they cost more than 5 percent of the total project. Originally, the policy set the threshold at 20 percent.
The policy, which goes into effect in 30 days, is similar to those adopted in communities across the country as part of a national movement to provide safe alternatives to vehicular travel.
It will become a permanent part of Tupelo's development code and subdivision regulations.
