NETTLETON – The Mooreville Troopers scored no style points Friday night in their contest with the Nettleton Tigers.

But the Troopers did score a Division 2-3A victory with a 12-6 win.

“Nobody was throwing strikes for either team, but we hit the ball well as a team,” veteran Mooreville coach Rex Berryman observed about the contest. “We didn’t finish well, but I was fairly satisfied.”

While both squads put runners on base, Mooreville capitalized the most effectively, especially in the top of the fourth inning.

In that frame, the Troopers (13-1, 2-0) sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs. The big hits in the inning were a pair of two-run singles by Tyler Moore and Shane Reeves.

That fourth inning backed up the pitching effort of Mooreville starter Tyler Awtrey. While not throwing at his best, Awtrey did pitch into the seventh inning, scattering five hits.

Both teams dented the scoreboard in the second inning with a pair of runs each. Mooreville saw a two-run single by Zach Barber, while Nettleton had an RBI single by Brandon Neal.

Mooreville then added a solo run in the fifth, and another pair in the seventh. Nettleton finally chased Awtrey in the seventh, scoring four times.

“Awtrey did well until the last inning,” Berryman said.

Awtrey raked up five strike outs, while allowing six walks. Nettleton starter Anthony Franklin pitched into the fourth inning, allowing eight hits.

“Mooreville has been doing this for years, making the routine plays,” Nettleton coach Greg Patterson said. “We didn’t capitalize, and they did, and that’s what they do.”

Mooreville continues in action today hosting Booneville at 7 p.m., then makes up a game Monday, hosting Tupelo.
