JACKSON — Mississippi lawmakers missed their budget-writing deadline Wednesday night, but they weren't fretting about it.

Leaders say they'll renew efforts to either extend the three-month session or to let lawmakers leave for a few weeks and return in late April to finish the spending plan.

The new fiscal year begins July 1.

Some lawmakers say there's no point in finishing a budget now because the state could receive $187 million from the federal government in the next few weeks.

Two-thirds of the House and Senate must agree on new budget deadlines.

If the regular session ends with no budget, Gov. Haley Barbour will have to a special session.

Well of course they aren't fretting about it. They want that extra cash for the special session. What do you want to bet that if they did not get paid for all these "special sessions" that Barber loves to call, they would get their work done in the amount of time they were elected to get it done?

If you work for a private employer and don't get your job done on time year after year, how long are you going to stay on his payroll? ...

good point Willer. They could also use it as a cushion to make sure that they do not have to do any budget cuts like they had to this year

No point in finishing a budget now because the state could receive $187 million from the federal govt? Here in lies our problem. Why don't you write it now, and ween yourself off the feds teet? Then when they try to force you to do something by saying "we'll pull your funding", you can tell them where to shove it!

Thanks to the left again everything is on hold and will probably cost us even more money that we don't have.

Yay!!!! Now teachers in Mississippi have to wait until May or June to know if we still have jobs. Most school districts in the state have to wait until that budget is passed before hiring in teachers. Hurry up and get that budget passed!
