Child has died of flu, health department says

OXFORD – A Lafayette County child has died of influenza, the state Department of Health reported Friday.

The child tested positive for Influenza A and had underlying health conditions. It has been classified as a pediatric death because the child was under age 18.

Since the beginning of the 2009-2010 flu season on Aug. 30, the state has reported 26 Influenza-related deaths, including four children. Most of the cases have been laboratory-confirmed as 2009 H1N1 swine flu.
