JACKSON — The lesbian high school student embroiled in a legal flap over her school's prom policy was presented with a $30,000 scholarship on Friday when she appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

Constance McMillen was speechless after the talk show host pulled out an oversized check from the Web site, Tonic.Com, a digital media company.

She was also offered an internship with the company Tonic.com in New York.

DeGeneres said she admired McMillen for challenging the Itawamba County School District rules that would prevent her from escorting her girlfriend to the prom. The school district canceled the April 2 prom in response to McMillen's requests.

A hearing is scheduled Monday in federal court in Aberdeen on the American Civil Liberties Union's motion to force the district to hold the prom.

If you Fundies had chosen to keep your children home from prom instead of forcing it to be canceled, there would be no problem.

I'm not too concerned... I'm sure the federal courts will start correcting your mistakes beginning next week.

Why can't everybody put the blame where it belongs. Constance didn't cancel a prom. It wasn't a "planned thing" with the ACLU. And if it was, the school board played right into her hands. This school board could interpertate the constitution, see that their same sex rule was unconstitutional and squash it, then let her come on with whoever, that would be the end of it. The school board canceled the prom!!!! nobody else, just them.

The ones who actually suffer is the rest of the IAHS students who have their prom all messed up because of one. Where is their scholarship money, guest spots on tv shows, and internship? I think we should all teach our children that the way to get ahead in this world is to stir up as much trouble as possible. That is the right way, isn't it?

Come on Chadwick, You know that it is wrong to be straight. Why would you ever get a scholarship for that! Pretend to be gay and cause a controversy somewhere, and someone will give you a scholarship. No money for doing what's right!

How did she cause trouble by standing up for what she believes??? She didn't cancel the prom.. the school board did! They asked for the trouble and publicity when they tried shoving the issue under the rug!! Sorry that her lifestyle troubles you, but there are plenty of people in Fulton and all of Mississippi that aren't judging her!! The school shouldn't mix religion with education. There are private schools and homeschooling options for those who want to keep their children away from "distractions"!!!

WOW! Let's reward everyone that causes trouble. Maybe she will move to NY and stop causing problems here in the Bible belt. She will fit in better up there.

Good for her. To echo what someone else here said, I hope that she takes full advantage of her scholarship and goes on to do great things in life.

For those of you criticizing her and/or Ellen and Tonic.com give me a break.

Ellen and the company Tonic.com can give money to whoever they want. They're private entities, unlike a public school.

As for her getting her 15 minutes of fame and no one knowing who she is next year, if I were her I wouldn't care if anyone remembered my name or not. I'd be too busy using my scholarship and studying to care.

So, for those of you criticizing her for taking advantage of these opportunities, shame on you for holding it against her. If you were given the same opportunities, I doubt you'd turn them down. And if you did, you'd just be confirming your own stupidity.

If you're so upset about it, you should be blaming the school district for not handling the issue appropriately.

Sure, she brought up the issue, but the poor handling of the issue by the school district is what brought the attention.

So, if you're the type of people who just can't stand to see anyone else do well and just have to blame someone because someone else got something that you didn't, blame the school board.

Good for Constance, and good for Ellen and Tonic.com.

Once again, I say if she had just gone to the prom, and not asked anyone for permission, probably nothing would ever have come of it. The fact that she stirred the pot just to make a point really ticks me off. Poor kids didn't have a prom because she wanted to prove a point? I didn't have a prom because the class before us decided to tear up the facility that they had it in...THAT'S a good reason to cancel a prom - but because you want to dress like a guy and bring a girl?? C'Mon. Who cares? I see chicks dressed like guys all over the Tupelo area EVERY DAY and no one says anything to them!

I hope Constance takes the tools available to her and excels. I also hope she continues to stand up for the rights of herself and others.

The issue was never whether she's going to college or not. If Ellen was really impressed, why isn't she paying for a wicked prom for ALL the students? No, wait. The ACLU's supposed to force the school to do that.

Is she going to pay for everybody in the class to go to college, or is it as tupelojoe said?

Good for her! When you go on Ellen, ya know you're gonna leave with your pockets stuffed. Maybe it's over now.
