Ole Miss to retire Colonel Reb merchandise

OXFORD – The University of Mississippi may have a new way to minimize the presence of Colonel Reb, the mascot that some see as beloved and benign but others see as a throwback to a plantation mentality.

Ole Miss removed the Colonel Rebel mascot from its sidelines in 2003, saying his presence was divisive. Ole Miss students voted in February to take part in a process to develop a new on-field mascot.

To keep control of the Colonel Reb trademark, the school has actually had to license the sale of merchandise with the logo, but its ongoing popularity frustrates administrations that have sought to distance the university from the character.

The College Licensing Co. stated last week that the image may be licensed only through Aug. 31, at which time Colonel Reb will enter the “College Vault” program along with other logos from colleges and universities, bowls and rivalries, under which it will be licensed only for special-occasion historical use.

“My understanding is that we’ll continue to license the use of him enough that we can still have control of the trademark,” said Donna Gurley, associate university attorney. “It’s going to be pretty limited use.”

The administration’s unsigned blog, Ole Miss Point of View, says, “Because Colonel Reb is a mark we wish to own as university property to prevent its inappropriate use by others and to avoid confusing consumers and Ole Miss supporters, we are going to reclassify the mark as ‘historical’ and add it to our college ‘vault.’”

The same blog entry notes that on-campus sales of Colonel Reb items will cease with current inventory. Merchandise with the famous logo has been drastically curtailed on the Ole Miss Bookstore Web site compared with just a few weeks ago.

University officials hope a new mascot will fill the vacuum.

“Once we identify a new mascot, we’ll quickly see what our licensees want to do with it,” said Clay Jones, director of human resources and contractual services.

Seriously though, if they are gonna take the mascot away because it offends people, they need to stop whoring out the image just to make a buck. You can't have it both ways.

I can see both sides of this. Yes Colonel Reb has been around since time immemorial and natives just see him as a time tested mascot for Ole Miss and nothing more. I think the school however is thinking of its future prospect to lure out of state students (where the real tuition money is since they pay a lot more of it) and to some who aren't from here it does smack of old school southern plantation mentality. Times they are a changin'....roll with it. Surely they can come up with something more badass than an old man in a string tie.

Where have all of you been? You seem to have forgotten that federal intervention was needed to allow black americans to attend Ole Miss. The Colonel was the univeristy mascot then. Although much has changed since then, the Colonel remains the universities mascot. That mascot remains to many as a symbol of the old ways of Mississippi. I definitely agree with one blogger, why attend if you don't like it? Ole Miss would be one of the last colleges I would choose to attend in the state of MS.

Ok, what's next? Take the OLE out of Ole Miss because it's hanging on to the "OLE" Southern mentality?!?!? What about UNLV? They have the same mascot, it's just in a different suit and they call him a "Running Rebel". What's the difference? Nothing!! But if Nevada was in the south, would they have to put up with the same crap as Ole Miss?

AMEGO, you may be on to something. By the time my daughters is old enough to attend Ole Miss in 3 years, it could and very likely might be known as the University of Oxford Hello Kittys!!!!!

IT ALL A BUNCH OF CRAP!!!!!!!

There are rumors that PETA is not thrilled with Wildcats beating Bulldogs. Just makes it sound so cruel.

How bout this headline, "The Daisy's were tiffed at their powder puffing by the Kitty Cat's in last nights tournament game."

I am almost 70 yrs. old and have followed Ole Miss sports most of that time. Never ONCE during that time, when watching Colonel Rebel, did the thought of RACISM enter into my mind. I just cannot understand it!!

i am so proud i started a collection of the old gentleman so many years ago. my collect is about three thousand pieces. all in the original packages. now they are worth their wait in gold. too bad people have to be such simple minded about this fellow. to me he looks like Mark Twain. if it bothered so many african americans then why are there so many african americans going to this collage?

I can't understand why it's ok for the whole country to eat chicken at KFC, which has the Colonel, with no problem...but one little school can't have a Colonel as it's mascot. What's the difference?
