JACKSON - The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed the Senate version of a bicycle safety act named after a Tupelo teen who was struck and killed by a truck last year.

A similar version proposed by the House currently awaits full Senate passage. Legislators must then decide which version of the "John Paul Frerer Bicycle Safety Act" to send to the governor.

If it becomes law, it'd require motorists to provide a 3-foot buffer when passing bicyclists on the same road.

How many 2 lane roads in MS. are wide enough to offer a 3 foot buffer zone between autos and bikes? I have to agree that this is just going to be another stupid law, if it passes.

Another stupid law that cannot be enforced. Yes, bicycles should have some sort of safety on public streets. But, you just have to wonder how smart someone is to get on a road with vehicles weighing tons and moving much faster than they are. This law is not going to protect anyone from being hit. It is just stupid. But it will allow families to sue someone who kills their family member. That is what it is really about, lawsuits.
