BIGGERSVILLE - Ten children and an adult were transported by ambulance to Magnolia Regional Health Center Tuesday afternoon after a school bus collided with a car on U.S. Highway 45 in front of Biggersville School.

Nine of the children were treated for minor injuries and released, and one child was being kept in the hospital overnight for observation, said hospital CEO Rick Napper.

The driver of the car involved in the accident was also transported, and no information was available on her condition, but a highway patrol spokesman said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. The bus driver was not injured.

The accident was reported about 3:30 p.m. to the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, said Trooper Ray Hall.

A school bus carrying 26 Biggersville Elementary School children and two teachers was returning from a science fair at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Hall said.

The northbound bus, driven by Shawn Mathis, 39, of Saltillo, turned left in the median and crossed the southbound lanes of U.S. 45 in the path of a 2001 Saturn, driven by Phylles Rhodes, 53, of Mantachie, Hall said.

The accident remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol.
