STARKVILLE — Starkville officials have voted to limit the amount of time pets can be restrained outdoors.

The board of aldermen voted Tuesday to make changes in the local pet ordinance.

The new ordinance would make it illegal for animals to be tethered with restricted movement for longer than three hours within a 24 hour period.

It also would require animals to have access to some type of shelter when the city is under a winter weather or heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service.

Violators of this ordinance will face misdemeanor charges.
