JACKSON — The ACLU of Mississippi has sent a letter to the Itawamba County School District challenging its policy on same-sex prom dates.

The demand letter was sent Tuesday on behalf of Constance McMillen, a student at Itawamba Agricultural High School who wants to take her girlfriend as a date to the April 2 prom.

ACLU Legal Director Kristy Bennett says school officials told McMillen she couldn’t arrive with her date and might be asked to leave if others complain about their presence.

The ACLU says the school also wouldn’t let McMillen wear a tuxedo.

District Superintendent Teresa McNeece didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.

In its letter, the ACLU says the school’s decisions violates the student’s constitutional rights.

"Be yourself"......."Let me be myself"......

What a load. It's people like this who are sending the world to hell at warp speed. If it were cool to be homosexual, we would've all been made the same. There wouldn't be any men or women. Everyone would have the same parts, because that's all we'd need. If you feel attracted to the same sex, then you're odd, different, and any other synonym that goes with it. I think homosexuality is more of a mental illness than a lifestyle.

Suddenly, that old '70's show, McMillen & Wife--which starred Rock Hudson, of all people--takes on a Whole New Meaning!

I gotta agree with some of the folks here. This is 2010, not 1950. This school has no clue what kind of can of worms they are about to open. If the national news gets the word on this it will make the whole area look pretty bad.

YOUR GOD. Your beliefs are your beliefs and you are free to have them but not everyone shares them. Neither laws nor school policy should be made based on them. You want a christian school, send your kid to one.

These kids should be allowed to be themselves as long as it's not hurting anyone. They shouldn't be pressured to fit some sort of outdated mold, or to have teachers and administrators making them feel like crap because they're unique.

MR T, they still let you go to the prom even though you're an asshole, right?

Hate the sin, not the sinner Mr.T because God also tells up to "judge not, lest ye be judged". He gave mankind rules AND the choice whether to follow them or not. Discriminating against any "gay" person will do more harm than good and, as a Christian myself, I feel the only way to win people over to Christ is to treat them better than you would want to be treated. Jesus was and is all about LOVE...not hate.

God gave the rules to mankind, mankind does not give the rules to God. Does SEANKAUFMAN think that he is smarter than God? Aren't you happy that your parent's weren't homosexual? Or else you would not be here today.

Maybe because of people like you and the administrators at this school, jack ass.

This is certainly not the first time that mankind has attempted to change the rules of God. I wonder why a group of people that refer to themselves as being "gay" have such a high rate of suicide? Being called odd or queer would be a lot more accurate description.

The school should've knew this was going to happen. It would've been a lot less of a headache if they just let the student take their date.

I am no fan of the ACLU, however, it seems to me that some females will go to proms in packs, would this too be illegal? What's wrong with a female student renting a tux instead of buying a $500 dress?

sandlot1959: Sounds like you might have had a breakthrough and are getting in touch with a whole new side of yourself! ;)

Seriously, people in this whole area need to lighten up and stop thinking that they are the "moral compass" for everyone else.

Whatever happened to "live and let live"?

I'd be willing to bet that adults are the the only people who have any problems with this girl bringing her girlfriend to the prom. The kids are probably just fine with it.

It's the kids' prom, all these backwards adults need to just leave them alone and let them have their prom and have a good time.

Wow.. Itawamba Schools sure seem to be making the news a lot lately for all the wrong reasons.

I think these are cases where the students can teach the adults a thing or two about deversity, open mindedness and accepting people that are different from you.

Well, the plot thickens. ACLU rearing its ugly head. Wonder how much money is floating around helping this deal along. Also wonder what happened to our friendly neighborhood cross dresser...
