The Salvation Army is calling for usable items and donations to serve the poor of Northeast Mississippi.

Maj. Sue Dorman, who oversees operations for Lee County, said the organization has received at least 15 percent less, which amounts to about $30-40,000, so far this year.

That includes furniture, clothing and money, all of which helps local people, either directly or through proceeds from the Army's thrift store. Dorman and Director of Social Services Susan Gilbert attributed the slump to the economy as well as to new thrift stores opened by other nonprofits.

The Salvation Army will pick up larger items, or people may drop off their contributions at 703 Daybrite Drive in Tupelo. Call (662) 842-0301 for more information.
