JACKSON — All four of Mississippi's U.S. House members will have opponents on the ballot this year.

Candidates were facing a qualifying deadline at 5 p.m. Monday.

In north Mississippi's 1st District, three Republicans and four independents had filed by mid-Monday, while incumbent Travis Childers of Booneville was the only Democrat.

The Republicans are state Sen. Alan Nunnelee of Tupelo, former Eupora mayor Henry Ross and ex-FoxNews commentator Angela McGlowan of Oxford.

The independents, whose names will be on the Nov. 2 ballot with party winners, are A.G. Baddley, 4585 Fogg Rd., Hernando, Les Green, 2395 Bright Rd., Hernando, Wally Pang, 208 Dogwood Dr., Batesville and Rick 'Rico' Hoskins, 29230 Hwy. 6 East, Batesville.

Little is known about three of the independents. Pang, a restaurant owner, ran against Childers and others in a special election early in 2008.

Monday, Republican Ross issued a public challenge to his two GOP opponents for a series of six debates from March through May.

In the Delta's 2nd District, there were three Republicans and Democratic incumbent Bennie Thompson.

In the central 3rd District, two Democrats and Republican incumbent Gregg Harper had filed.

In the southern 4th District, there were two Republicans and Democratic incumbent Gene Taylor.

Maybe we should talk to the little known candidates we need some one new that would really work for us.

Nunnelee and the big wigs at NMMC wanted the public to believe that a competing hospital would cause the loss of health care jobs and the costs of health care to go up here in North Mississippi.

Are people foolish enough to believe that propaganda? A competing hospital in Tupelo would have meant more health care jobs, better wages and benefits for health care workers and better care for the patients. A second hospital to compete with MMMC would be the best thing to ever happen to Tupelo and North Mississippi.

Do you think that Nunnelee might have gotten his campaign nest feathered just a little bit for killing the bill that would have brought competition to NMMC?

PLEASE do not send Nunnelee to Washington. We need real leadership - not someone to do the bidding of Governor Barbour and North Mississippi Medical Center.

Everyone should watch the amount of money poured into Alan Nunnelee's campaign for Congress by North Mississippi Medical Center through their top brass, along with all of the medical community in the Tupelo area.

Remember folks, good Senator Nunnelee exercised a pocket veto by never bringing up for a vote in his committee the bill championed by Steve Holland to allow a competing hospital to locate in Tupelo.

I wonder who Nunnelee will be beholden too in Congress?

pilotricardo: Unfortunately until we wake up and demand term limits, running for office is out of reach of the best among us.

Under the current system, only those willing to compromise their integrity are able to run for state or national office.

We have a shortage of statesmen and are instead stuck with politicians.

That's not how the founding fathers intended it, but unfortunately that's what it has become.

I wish I was rich so I could run for office. I wouldn't mind some bribe money or some kickbacks.

Eventhough he's a Democrat, Gene Taylor is the only incumbent that should be re-elected. The rest of them are worthless, especially that idiot Bennine Thompson.
