JACKSON — Gov. Haley Barbour has signed an order that gives the state control of the troubled Okolona Municipal Separate School District.

Barbour says the district's conditions jeopardize the educational interests of its 650 students. He says the district has serious fiscal and academic problems.

The order, signed Wednesday, allows the state Department of Education to take corrective action, which involves appointing a conservator to oversee operations for a certain amount of time.

State Superintendent of Education Tom Burnham has said the district will run out of money before the fiscal year ends June 30. He says the district has a pattern of poor student performance.

What's the deal: catatonic students, or on-line staff?

Sad old town, I'd say.
