STARKVILLE — A $500 reward has been offered for the return of the Starkville Police Department's rescue dog.

Police Chief David Lindley tells the Starkville Daily News that the 2-year-old black female German shepherd named Samantha — but answers to "Sam" — is owned by Officer Stephanie Perkins.

Lindley says Sam is a trained search and rescue dog. She frequently accompanies Perkins when she's on duty to in search and rescue operations when needed.

Perkins says the dog has been missing for a week.

Lindley says he believes the dog got loose and that someone picked the dog up, not realizing who it belongs to.
