TUPELO – Alan Nunnelee promises to talk about why he should be in Congress, not why someone else shouldn’t.

“I feel very strongly that I need to tell you what I’m for,” said the Tupelo state senator seeking the Republican nomination for the U.S. House 1st District seat.

Wednesday, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was the campaign’s guest for a fundraiser luncheon, and the 2008 presidential candidate strongly endorsed Nunnelee’s candidacy.

“Alan Nunnelee is your friend,” Huckabee said to the crowd of nearly 200 in the BancorpSouth Conference Center. “This is one guy who won’t be voting for Nancy Pelosi for speaker.”

That was a jab at current U.S. Rep. Travis Childers of Booneville, a Democrat who’s defended his vote for the California congresswoman, saying it made no sense for him to support Republican John Boehner of Ohio for the job.

Huckabee, now a Fox News political commentator, said he’s confident in Nunnelee’s chances in the June primary and against Childers in November, as well as in the success of the conservative tide for change in Congress.

“I’m confident there’s an awakening in the American spirit” for more conservative choices, he said.

Huckabee praised Nunnelee’s role as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and termed him one of Gov. Haley Barbour’s strongest allies on state budget matters.

He didn’t overlook the candidate’s pro-life history, saying, “There’s no greater champion for human life in the Mississippi Legislature than Alan Nunnelee.”

Earlier in the program, Nunnelee outlined some issues he described as his “vision” for holding office and for America.

He promised to hold face-to-face town hall meetings, to push Congress to conduct business more openly, to hold life sacred, to respect gun rights and to promote national security and economic prosperity.

“In short, to pass along a legacy of freedom for the next generation,” Nunnelee said.

In the June 1 primary, he faces Republicans Angela McGlowan of Oxford, a former Fox News commentator, and Henry Ross of Eupora, a former mayor.

And how charitable of him to schedule his event directly opposite the Salvation Army's Empty Bowls lunch. I guess those Christian Republicans don't believe in feeding the hungry. Funny, my Bible says something totally different.

Some people should read the "flag code."

"The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery." (Flag Code, Section 8d)

Senator Nunnelee "helped" the people of Northeast Mississippi by single handedly killing the bill that would have allowed a competing hospital to NMMC come to Tupelo. The bill was passed in the House through the efforts of Rep. Steve Holland. Despite the fact that there was overwhelming public support for this bill, Nunnellee killed it in the Senate by never bringing it up for a vote in his comittee.

Is Senator Nunnelee going to represent the people of North Mississippi in Congress, or is he going to continue to be a lap dog for North Mississippi Medical Center. Look at his campaign finance reports at the contributions from the medical community and make up your own mind about who Nunnelee will represent in Congress.

hatchieboy,

I wonder which one will be paid for legislative work with public funds while not actually at the capitol. I guess he does have some talent after all.

Yep, I betcha that's what it is.

(Wonder which one showed up at Tupelo?!?)

Question--How did Nunnellee attend a lunch time fund raiser in Tupelo while being signed in as present in the Senate chambers in Jackson? Something smells.......sniff sniff.

I attended the announcements to run for all three candidates.I honestly like Angela a lot

and think she would do a great job. I had almost decided to support her, but I think, right or wrong, that she may shot herself in the foot (pun intended) over the gun registration issue. I actually believe her explanation, but the damage has been done. Of the three, I am now leaning towards Henry Ross. Any of the three will be better than what we have now. I am thrilled that we have three excellent choices.

Hey BuzzSaw,

Maybe he voted at Jackson and drove to Tupelo?!?!

If so, he prob'ly drove one of them souped up Toyotas. Sure wouldn't have wanted to be a squirrel crossing the road when that sucker whizzed by...

Disclaimer: I am not a Childers supporter.

I pray everyday that the Lord will send a decent candidate to the people of the northern district. I thought maybe we had a glimmer of hope with Angela McGlowan. But after her comments about the gun control bill she lost my support as well as any chance at winning this congressional seat. I don't know Mr. Nunalle, but I am smart enough to know that he will only be a "blind leading the blind, talking point reciting, Republican elite, suck up puppet. He will be another example of what is the problem with Washington today. Plain and Simple. We need a leader for US, not someone that looks out for their own pocket book and status symbol building. We have enough of those up there now. Allan Nunallee is a PRIME example of the "Status Quo"

It would have been a good thing for Sen. Nunnelee to have used the presence of former Gov. Huckabee (I believe he's an ordained minister)to have expounded on his intention to not talk about why someone else should not be the GOP nominee by using publicly chastising his supporters that were reportedly 'heckling' Angela McGlowan.

That's surely not what a member of the 'religious right' should condone.

Oh, and as to Nunnellee not showing up for work for the in session senate, he'll work just as hard in congress!

Of course Childers is going to vote democratic speaker of the house. What a stupid statement out of the mouth of a citizen voted against wannabe Republican president!

Yep, and he's supporting Nunnelee. Scarey!

I'm confused??? I thought Nunnellee was presently being paid to serve as a State Senator? Wasn't the legislature in session yesterday? Will he be paid for attendance yesterday? How did he vote for bills that passed yesterday if he was in Tupelo? You can verify that he is recorded as voting for bills yesterday while he was in Tupelo.
