JACKSON — The Mississippi Department of Health reports the state's first confirmed case of West Nile virus this year.

A news release says the case was reported in Coahoma County early in February.

The state reported 53 cases last year. Four people died of the virus.

State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier says it's important to remember that any disease spread by mosquitoes can occur in Mississippi all year long.

About 90 percent of all people infected by the virus never show any symptoms, and about 10 percent develop a flu-like fever. A few get a dangerous infection of the lining of the brain or spinal cause. That can cause death.
