STARKVILLE — Authorities have charged a Mississippi State University student with assault for hitting another student with a cowbell after the Egg Bowl in November.

MSU Police Department Sgt. Brad Massey tells the Starkville Daily News that 23-year-old Brett Morgan Vowell of Columbus turned himself in Wednesday and was released on $5,000 bond.

Massey says Vowell has been charged with aggravated assault. No court date has been set.

The incident occurred in the student section in the north end zone at MSU stadium during the post-game celebration following the Bulldogs victory over Mississippi on Nov. 28, 2009.

Police say the victim suffered a severe head wound after being struck in the head with a cowbell after an argument. The victim hasn't been identified.

That is the first time a tsun fan has called me sensitive. I am usually the one saying that! LOL! I hope recruiting MS works, we have great kids with talent in MS. I want to see them stay in MS.

I knew the tsun came from Woody. I told a tsun fan that once and he started in on how classless Woody was!

BTW, good game last night. Glad the Dawgs won!

Not a sign of arrogance. Quit being so sensitive. I've got tons of friends from MS State that I would respond with tsbu if I ever heard them say tsun. Mullen stole that TSUN phrase from Woody Hayes anyways.

I don't see that whole focusing recruiting in MS working out for ya'll, but I guess we'll see how it plays out in a few years.

Time to watch the basketball game. Should be a good one.

Raleigh,

I can't find the final rankings on scout. Your link is for the scout rankings determined in May 09 before we know who actually gets to campus. Even if those are the final rankings with the wrong time stamp, you barely finished ahead of us last year. This year y'all beat us. You need to remember one thing, one bad season and the kids from FL, GA, etc will not even consider tsun. Kids these days are all about what have you done lately. We have been in one of the worse football funks I have witnessed but all the MS kids know our program, know what Coach Mullen is about and will still come to us. It will hard for Nutt to recruit if you ever revert back to the 2007 season form. Losing 25 players off the two deep chart makes it look like next year will be closer to 2007 than 2009 for y'all.

One a side note, tsun fans like to call us tsbu. I find that very funny. We refer to y'all using a direction, north; y'all refer to us as beneath you, a sign of arrogance. You take the Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue off, we take the Maroon and White off, put us all in green and you can't tell the difference in the fans. At least the fans I know from both schools.

Which rankings are you looking at from last year?

Rivals (2009): http://rivals100.rivals.com/TeamRank.asp?postype=0&sort=0&year=2009

Scout (2009):

http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=14&yr=2009

We're ahead of you in both. I can understand the frustration with DosChiChis, but the Ole Miss football program's future is definitely looking better than tsbu from my view.

Raleigh,

You are right, neither have alot to brag about. On recruiting, we finished ahead of you once the final rankings were released in the fall. We will not rank above you this year but your ranking will fall. You signed 25 kids but only have room for 18. So once the final rankings come out when kids actually make it to campus, you will not be as far ahead as it seems.

Me419,

We do have an awesome mojo going on in Oxford that's got us two straight top 20 recruiting classes. I love how you throw that 0-8 record from three years ago in there. Why don't we go back one more year (who's counting?) to include your 1-7 record? That puts us even at 11-21 SEC and 2-2 against each other over four years. Nothing to brag about for either team. Ya'll have the latest Egg Bowl bragging rights but we have the last two Cotton Bowl bragging rights. I'll take the latter anyday, and from the recruiting results this year, most recruits think the same way.

DosChiChis, cowbells and all artifical noisemakers are not illegal. Ask any referee and they will tell you that the "cowbell" rule is an SEC rule but the NCAA removed noisemakers rules years ago. This is why cowbells cannot be penalized on the field of play. The SEC is not king in the sports world, the NCAA is. As long as we follow NCAA rules, we are doing no wrong. I do believe the alcohol is a MS law. Seems you should be worried about violating actual laws not sports rules than mean nothing.

On winning, tsun has not had an advantage in 20 years. Get over it. You just enjoyed the best two year run in tsun history since the 60s and you still did not go to Atl. Oh and in that amazing two year run, you went 1-1 against little ole MSU. Don't forget the 2007 year when you went 0-8, so over the past three years in the conference you are what 9-15 including 1-2 against MSU. Some awesome mojo going on in oxford.

DosChiChis, either provide evidence (i.e. aritcles, newspaper arrest reports, etc) that this such thing happens every year or shut the hell up. We get tired of your obviously biased, and untrue, remarks. You're old news.

fans are artificial noise makers too.....i dont think it's fair that LSU has 93,000 fans on hand, it's not fair for MSU or Ole Miss......the Wind isnt fair, let's ban outdoor stadiums.....

they are banned because they are artificial noise makers and that gives MSU an unfair advantage. The decibel level over doubles when fans are rattling those things. The levels are so high that it can cause permanent hearing damage to players, coaches, and officials. Not to mention that this is not the first time they have been used as weapons. It seems there have been acts of violence perpatrated by these illegal noise makers almost every year. A rule is a rule and it should be enforced equally among all schools. I don't know of another college that openly allows their students to break the rules. If I am wrong please let me know. I know alcohol is at all schools but OM or any other schools makes attempts to search for it prior to entering their facilities. I think State should have to forfeit any previous win where it can be proven cowbells were used. I know this will not be a lot of wins because

State doesn't have many, but it will send a message that we will not tolerate this non-sense any longer.

Anything can be used as a weapon. Alcohol bottles flying at tsun is a dangerous situation. What would have happened is that little girl had hit a Bama player with her red high heels a few years ago? Are we going to ban everything to where you go to a football game in your underwear and sit on padded seats and bleachers?

you have it backwards tupelojoe. The victim and the suspect were both MSU students. The suspect is the one that had ole miss fans sitting with him, in fact he is dating an ole miss fan from orignally from oxford. Yes verbal sparring did take place and then the suspect turned violent.

from the previous article:

The victim and the suspect — also believed to be an MSU student —

The victim had some friends from Ole Miss with him in the stands, and, after MSU won the football game, some verbal sparring occurred with the suspect that turned violent, culminating in the victim being struck with the cowbell, Massey said.

How'd he have a cowbell aren't they illegal and banned? HAHA! Seriously if they are going to be allowed maybe we should have some type of class down there on Cowbell etiquette. If someone had a flag maybe the victim could have protected himself. Oh wait, flags are illegal and banned. Dang.
