The Houston School District has suspended a substitute teacher over inappropriate racial comments to a group of fifth graders, WTVA.com reports.

"Apparently, everyone was talking up at the pencil sharpener, and she said, 'You [expletive deleted] need to sit down,'" said Tamika Ivy, a parent of one of the children in the classroom, told WTVA.

The word was a racial slur for African Americans.

The substitute teacher was suspended two days without pay. Parents are asking for the teacher to be fired.

Houston School District Superintendent Steve Coker said the situation was unprofessional and inappropriate.

The unnamed teacher is remaining in her position as a bus driver.

@babydoll32ms...a few things..yes there are historically black schools in MS..and WHITE people go to school there too. Historically black doesn't mean black only. You are correct they have 1 or 2 'black' shows but 1 or 2 out of how many..lets look at ABC, NBC, CBS..etc the ratio is 99% to 1% that's why stations like BET exist...but beyond going into anything more elaborate your post said it all.."I am not racist" but then you say "To me they act like a bunch of wild MONKEYS"..nothing more needs to be said..you said it all right there :) If you were discriminated against then that person was just as wrong as the teacher at the school. And lastly BLACK PEOPLE are not a collective group of people. We don't all act, think, or look alike so for you to say "I could care less how black people act" just shows how stereotypes shape the perception of people...

@babydoll32ms...what African Americans do you know that still think they are in slavery? It's not ok for anyone to say it black or white. Personally, I laugh at ignorant people who use it b/c they want you to get mad and riled up that's why they use words like that. I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of thinking they are important enough to warrant anger from me. Further more to your point..about all black schools, shows..etc. If you look back at the beginnings of these things, they came about because blacks were traditionally excluded from networks like MTV so they created BET to play their music. Flip a channel on any major next work today and count the number of sitcome or shows that are on...(don't worry I'll wait). How many African Americans have you seen in high fashion run ways..(maybe 4 or 5)out of the entire history..that's why their are black fashion shows. That's not trying to get attention that's pointing out facts. We wouldn't need an entire Black History month if something besides slavery was discussed in classrooms year around. There are plenty of accomplishments that can be noted but you only hear about them during that month. Racism is overrated to you b/c you haven't be discriminated against and you don't know how it feels to have people overlook your entire life and accomplishments and diminish and disrespect you due to the color of your skin. Racism has been around since the days in the Bible and it's not going anywhere soon. The only thing we can do is pray for those individuals and work towards progressing.
