JACKSON - The Mississippi Senate on Friday reduced the amount of funds to restore education cuts made by Gov. Haley Barbour from $45 million to $28 million.

But that still was more than the Senate leadership had proposed.

On Friday, the Senate approved spending $58 million in reserve funds, with $28 million going to K-12, education. The rest of the funds would restore a portion of the cuts in a number of areas, including for higher education and for districts attorneys.

Barbour has made $458 million in cuts because tax collections are not meeting projections. The last $21 million were announced Friday.

On Thursday, the Senate voted to restore $45 million in education cuts. The Senate leadership had intended to amend that proposal to provide funds in a number of areas with only $16.6 million going to K-12 education But Sen. Hob Bryan, D-Amory, made the proposal to put an additional $12 million in education, taking it from Corrections. It passed by a surprisingly large 44-2 margin.

It's a bit ironic that there's a rainy day fund you can't use in a downpour. I'm all for education, and spending to support it, however, I wish someone would bother breaking down for us exactly where this education money goes. I want it going to the betterment of our students and the pay of the best teachers they can find. What I don't want is for it to be absorbed by bureaucracy and used to give overpaid administrators more bank.

Sen. Nunnelee wants to run for the Congressional office but refuses to fund education. Stop being the puppet of the governor, because he is promising you so much money for your campaign and use that rainy day fund...Schools don't have it but you do. BETTER NOT HAVE TO CALL A SPECIAL SESSION SO YOU CAN MAKE MORE AND DRAIN OUR POCKETS EVEN MORE!!!
