FULTON – A male student at Itawamba Agricultural High School was sent home Thursday morning after going to school dressed like a girl.

IAHS freshman Juin Baize recently moved to Itawamba County from New Harmony, Ind. He started school Friday dressed similarly without incident and was then absent on Monday and Tuesday because he was sick.

He said that when he returned to school on Wednesday wearing heels and makeup, he was told he couldn’t come to school dressed the way he was. The same thing happened when he arrived at school on Thursday.

“They told me I was too feminine and they were mainly pointing out my heels,” Baize said. “I honestly don’t have boy clothes. I don’t have the money to buy boy clothes. I’m not going to because like everyone else, I’m there to get an education, and everyone else gets to dress like they want to.”

A group of girls at the school also dressed as boys Thursday to protest.

Itawamba County school board attorney Michele Floyd did would not confirm that a student was sent home for dressing like a girl but did say that two students were sent home in violation of dress code policy.

Floyd said it was a different violation for each student.

“My understanding is that they violated the portion of our dress code that says clothing or general appearance are not to be of the type that would cause a disturbance or interfere with an instructional program and should not constitute a health or safety hazard,” Floyd said.

The school’s dress code listed on its Web site lists 19 possible violations, including the one stated by Floyd.

“Our opinion is that it is like any other dress code violation and that is how we handled it,” Floyd said.

I knew Juin too during his time at MVHS. He's a bright and amazing person. Ya he makes a bold statement but thats what makes him Juin. Hell we have girls and lesbians who dress as boys all the time at my school, so why cant a gay guy dress like a girl? People use to always come up to us and ask him if he was a guy or a girl. All I could think was, really? You're so ignorant to ask? How sad. We as people were not put on this earth to judge or please others. And NO it DOESN'T say in the bible that god hates gays or homosexuals. Where yall get that from I have no clue. Here's a fun fact did you know that there is at least one gay person in EVERY family? Ya there is. Yall are ignorant and sad people for thinking that he had this all planned out and that he shouldn't be who he is. People like you make people like me SICK! I don't judge by clothes, color, dress, or sexuality. I judge by their attitudes and characters. All of you who bash, ridicule or condem others because of these things, i feel very sorry for you. Cause if there is a god, he loves everybody no matter what.

I live in Mount Vernon Indiana and I personally know this guy.He is actually a very good person and real easy to get along with. So therefore I do not see what the big issue is if he likes to dress a certain way then let him. School is supposed to be for education and everyone should be entitled to an education. No one should be turned down solely because they like to dress or act different from everyone else. In this country we are given the freedom of expression and I believe that Juin has every right to go to school and express himself how ever he wants.

I really do think the "boy" was planted here. For years, people have been trying to conform society to accept the new "hip" trends. Mississippi is no exception, but we, being the stubborn state that we are, rebel against the ideals of modern society like gay marriage, abortion, etc. Someone or some organization is trying to stir up a fight, in my opinion, so they send this..er..boy to Fulton, MS, a town right in the heart of the Bible Belt. The school has already been dubbed a controversial one already what with the "racism" issue a few years back; the organization or family must have thought IAHS was perfect. And GeeGee....Yes, God is the ultimate judge. Yes, God says to love your friends and enemies. But, if you read up just a tad, you will also see that God clearly and deliberately states that He HATES homosexuality. Hates it. And, like I said--read up and you'll see, God doesn't hate things very often, but when He does, it's serious. So, you make think us "unChristian" for chastising this "boy" for his clothing choice (which he has control over whether he says so or not), but, in actual reality, we aren't. He is.

I hate to tell you this Cathy but we BOTH misspelled it...LOL..on the other hand, I'm not sure what a couple of letters has to do with the debate...abhorrent has many meanings including being strongly opposed to something. ALL of the things you listed are abhorrent but so is this young mans behavior, TO ME...and to many others...as I said earlier if you happened to read my posts, this is obviously a setup..this guy or his family or some organization is involved in this. There is no way that this story has already spread all over the country and has loaded up the blogs unless there was some advanced planning. This is nothing more than the same type of situation that Lisa Herdahl brought to Mississippi when the ACLU backed her ia a fight to remove student prayer from the classroom. The only reason the progressives make ANY advances at all is because many people are too easily fooled by the "compassion" angle of the story...I'm afraid YOU are one of those people....Let change my point to satisfy your sense of semantics..."THE SITUATION INVOLVING THIS YOUNG MAN AND WHAT HE AND HIS COHORTS ARE ATTEMPTING TO DO, IS ABHORRENT"....

Post script to GEEGEE...I have a favorite cousing that is gay..I love her very much but would never allow her to demonstrate homosexual behavior or be some kind of bizarre distraction is my home. When she is on her OWN time, she can do as she wishes. But she knows when she is in the company of my family, flamboyant homosexual activity is not allowed. Accepting someone has nothing to do with accepting their behaviors and it NOT "unChristian" do not accept this type of behavior...

PSS..my advance apologies if I made any grammar or spelling mistakes...I am old and have forgotten much of what I learned in elementary school....:)

On the what kids wear to school issue put me down in favor of school uniforms. That being said, I don't have a problem with what this particular kid wants to wear--but the school dress code specifies "can't cause a disturbance" and I believe we can assume that he caused a stir. I hope they are also sending girls home for wearing tight t-shirts and thin bras and boys with their underwear hanging out. Those can cause quite a reaction among teens as well. (Actually, best I can tell the girls are ignoring the boys who can't pull their pants up.) The key here is that *I wouldn't know*--I'm not there, just as the majority of the folks posting comments here aren't as well.

However I would like to address a comment below talking about this kid's "obhorent" behavior. Assuming you mean "abhorent" I find that comment out of line.

Abhorent is parents who leave their toddlers to swelter and die in cars while they hang out with their friends or hook up with new lovers.

Abhorent is dogowners who train fighting dogs by feeding them cats and small dogs that they have stolen out of suburban neigborhoods.

Abhorent is bringing your child to the dentist to fake a toothache so that you can get a narcotics prescription. (Really abhorent is taking your hurting child around to 5 or 6 dentists in a week to get more drugs before you finally take them back to get the needed treatment to relieve the pain.)

Abhorent is a lot of things. But some 15 year old boy wearing a skirt and pumps to school doesn't even hit my radar. Silly, ridiculous, attention-seeking, and (in Fulton, MS) risky, yes. But abhorent? I think we need a little perspective here.

He's probably lucky he got sent home before some of the "good ole boys" took care of him and taught him a lesson in proper dress.

where were this boys parents? usually when something like this happens that parents stand up and defend the child. why didn't his?

i would be curious to know why they moved here.

people like that dont just end up in itawamba county with out a reason.

he knew what he was doing. he went the first day dressed normally. he was scoping out the atmosphere on the first day and then went back to make a statement.

IAHS the solution is school uniforms. This is what Attorney Floyd and the school board need to be working on. Uniforms would be the dress code, period. Students should be here to learn, and not looking at each other to see how stupid they can dress everyday. I know this is 2010, and I know parents are not as responsible as they used to be, that may be the reason some kids show up at school looking like "freaks" in a circus side show!

I agree with Eagles1979. I heard his interview and read the newspaper article. I feel sure that the community would help him raise the money to buy himself some "boy" clothes. Or there are too many locations to get clothing at no charge for him. That is an excuse.

I was wondering, what bathroom does he use? The gals or the guys. Does he know which one?

Why are all the out of state people always trying to change MS. If you don't like what we do here don't come here! We are the south. We are the part of the world where GOD made Adam and Eve! Not Adam and Steve! Next thing they will be wanting to enter the women's beauty reviews. Let this guy go back to IND. and take the rest of the DRAG QUEENS with him!

Kinda surprising that the girls are protesting.

Looks like they wouldn't want the competition.

Oh well, I guess someone new to borrow shoes from and swap make-up tips trumps that.

BUT, it could get kinda "interesting" at the next slumber party.

This is just another case of parents not being responsible for their children and raising them the way they should. It's obvious this young man doesn't have a job, so why would his parents buy him dresses to begin with. Parents need to stop being their kids friend and start being parents. Crap like this in school is exactly the reason I do homeschool my children.

this kid will be in jail in a few years, so dont worry about it......just a cry for attention.

The reality is that a person acting in this behavior is unlikely to be employed…ever. It is a cry for attention, and an utter disregard for the rules, an action that he knew was likely to get himself in trouble. The school has rules in place to prevent distractions, much like a workplace. Service companies and restaurants require some to cover tattoos or remove earrings, offices require conservative clothing that does not create distractions, and retail establishments require that you dress with respect to the customers. Many teachers reprimand any type of violation of school dress codes. The students at that high school won’t be too excited for that young mans actions when they are all wearing uniforms.

I saw where someone stated that we need to get with 2010, and another where someone commented where Mississippi was in a time warp; seeing the actions taken by the school and the comments supporting the school make me proud to call Mississippi home. There is way too much “political correctness” and way too little regard for the rules in modern day society. It is great if people want to express themselves, just do it when you are not on someone else’s time. It does not bother me to see a man dressed as a woman while out shopping, though I don’t understand it and find it odd. If we as a society were to throw out all rules, or the enforcement of them, can you imagine what type of place we would live in…I know I wouldn’t want to live in that type of place!

Yet another incident that reminds me of why I want to homeschool when I have kids.

PS. "pants on the ground" shouldn't be allowed either and Tupelo at least is addressing that as are many other school districts. Certainly about time...

c'mon creep...if living in 2010 means having to accept this type of obhorant behaviour, I, and I believe most people, don't want any part of it. As I said previously, these kids can do whatever they want on their own time, but I dont want my child distracted by this type of foolishness. And I don't believe any future employer he might have will put up with this either. It wouldn't surprise me if this boy's family has ties to the ACLU. I figure the story here is less about WHAT he is doing and more about WHY he is doing it...
