Led by Josh McCalmon’s 23 points, BMC posted its first victory since beating Bethel College on Jan. 24, 2009.
Renell Collins had 20 points for the Toppers, now 1-23 and 1-7 in the TranSouth Athletics Conference, and Lakendrick McCullum had 14 points and a season-high 19 rebounds. Mike Chatham scored 11 points.
BMC held a 14-point lead with 3:11 left in the game, but held off a late Lyon rally
Slater Belew (5-15, 1-7) led the Scots with 20 points and Andy Lee had 18.
In the women’s game, BMC turned on a furious rally in the final minutes to force overtime, but Lyon pulled out a 69-59 victory.
The Lady Toppers trailed by as many as nine points in the second half but slowly chipped away at the Pipers’ lead and Katelynn Wright hit a desperation, off-balance, left-handed 3-pointer at the final buzzer in regulation to tie it at 54-54.
The two teams swapped baskets to open the overtime period, but Lyon the fired off six unanswered points to take the lead for good.
The Pipers were led by Keshianna Hodges with 33 points and Suzanne Fincham with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Lyon improved its record to 14-7 on the season, 4-4 in the TSAC.
The Lady Toppers, who dropped their fourth straight and are now 8-14 and 1-7, were led by Joy Pierce with 13 points and Lauren Burgess and Wright with 12 each.
BMC will play host to Freed-Hardeman at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday.
