The bill passed Wednesday after the committee heard from law enforcement agents, judges and a representative of drug manufacturers.
A House version of the proposal passed earlier this week in the House Judiciary A Committee.
Opponents say requiring a prescription for cold medicine could create a burden on the uninsured in the state. But supporters say the change could put a dent it the escalating meth problem.

Soon druggies will figure out that they can make their own Pseudo-ephedrine as easy as they make the the crystal meth that they need it for. What then a M.D. prescription to own a certian type of tree in our own yards ?
We clearly elect idiots to the House, Senate and Governorship in this state.
They don't think before they act.
I would love for them to have to look the poor mothers in the eyes who can't afford to take their sick children to a doctor just so they can go and get what they already know they need.
I don't have children and thank goodness I'm rarely sick. But, I'm outraged by this and anyone reading this should be too.
Everyone reading this should call or write their state representative and senator and tell them just how stupid this action is.
And we should find out the names of everyone that voted for this stupid legislation and vote and campaign against them the next time they're up for re-election.
I'm embarrassed that Mississippi would pass such legislation. It just shows the rest of the country just how backwards and illogical in our thinking we are here.
Just put the stuff behind the counter and make anyone purchasing more than a reasonable amount provide ID, record the info and report them to the DEA. That's the way the more intelligent states handle it.
What's next? Am I going to have to get a note from a plumber to buy Draino?!!
I'm sure the doctors are gonna love this!! Cha-ching!! for them.
BTW, if drugs were legal and regulated, these bozo's wouldn't be making their own and causing those of us who don't do meth to have to spend money for an office visit with our doctor in order to get something that we should be able to buy over the counter.
