North Pontotoc High School will be looking for its third football coach in four years.

J.J. Plummer announced Thursday that he will be leaving NPHS after one season to become St. Andrew’s Episcopal School’s next head football coach. The Vikings went 6-4 and just missed out on making the playoffs this past season.

He said his decision to leave North Pontotoc for the Ridgeland-based school had to do with his wife’s job location and his son from a previous marriage living closeby in Clinton.

Before taking the North Pontotoc job, Plummer was the receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Hinds Community College, which is also located in the metro-Jackson area.

“My wife (Olivia Plummer) had been traveling back and forth from Jackson for her nursing job,” Plummer said. “Due to budget cutbacks, my wife couldn’t find a job in the area.”

Plummer replaced Cliff Dew at the North Pontotoc helm when Dew left for Kentucky after two seasons. Dew was Marty Warren’s successor.

Plummer said he is unaware of who his replacement will be at North Pontotoc or when the search process will officially begin.

“I know on this (North Pontotoc) staff there are a couple of guys who will be a good hire,” he said. “I know there are a couple of good, qualified candidates right now on this staff.”
