TUPELO – About 150 people have shown up for a public hearing tonight to discuss the U.S. Postal Service's plan to move some Tupelo mail-processing operations to Memphis.

The hearing, which was set for 6:30 p.m., will include comments from Postal Service representatives as well as remarks by local leaders, including Mayor Jack Reed Jr.

The Postal Service says consolidation will save about $181,000 and will result in the elimination of six jobs.

Opponents of the move, including Reed, are concerned not only about the job losses but a decline in the quality of service.

Check back later for updates. For the complete story, see Thursday's Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.
