JACKSON — Some Mississippi University for Women supporters say they feel confident the school will be spared from a proposed merger.

The group, Friends of the W, met with legislators at the Capitol on Monday. Members Linda Ross Aldy and Betty Lou Jones say they've been given assurances from lawmakers that MUW would remain independent.

Gov. Haley Barbour had proposed merging MUW with Mississippi State University. He also wanted to combine the state's three historically black universities.

House Universities and Colleges Committee Chairman Kelvin Buck is among the legislators opposed to the plan.

Aldy said the group also wants to raise private money to offset $2 million in state funding cuts. The money had been used for scholarships.
