Incumbents dominate early judicial qualifiers

Judges from chancery and circuit levels through Mississippi Supreme Court will be up for election in 2010.

The qualifying deadline is May 7 for the Nov. 2 vote.

As of Friday, these candidates had filed the necessary paperwork with the secretary of state’s office to be on the non-party ballot:

CHANCERY JUDGE

DISTRICT 1 – Alcorn, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Tishomingo, Union counties. Four judges, each elected districtwide for a “Place.”

Place 1 (must live in Alcorn, Prentiss or Tishomingo): John A. Hatcher, incumbent

Place 2 (from Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc or Union): Michael Malski, incumbent

Place 3 (from Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc or Union): Jacqueline Estes Mask, incumbent

Place 4 (from any county in the district): Talmadge D. Littlejohn, incumbent

DISTRICT 14 – Chickasaw, Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Webster, counties. Three judges, each elected only by the voters of subdistrict.

Subdistrict 1 (from Chickasaw, Webster and parts of Oktibbeha): Kenneth M. Burns, incumbent

Subdistrict 2 (from parts of Clay and Lowndes): Jim Davidson, incumbent

Subdistrict 3 (from Noxubee and parts of Clay, Lowndes and Oktibbeha): Dorothy W. Colom, incumbent

DISTRICT 18 – Benton, Calhoun, Lafayette, Marshall, Tippah counties. Two judges, each elected districtwide from a “Place.” State law does not specify territory for each place.

Place 1: Glenn Alderson, incumbent

Place 2: Edwin H. Roberts, incumbent

CIRCUIT JUDGE

DISTRICT 1 – Alcorn, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Tishomingo counties. Four judges elected districtwide, run by “Place.”

Place 1 (from Alcorn, Prentiss or Tishomingo): Jim “Seth” Pounds, incumbent

Places 2, 3 (from Itawamba, Lee, Monroe or Pontotoc): no qualifiers yet

Place 4 (from any county in the district): James L. Roberts, incumbent

DISTRICT 3 – Benton, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Lafayette, Marshall, Tippah, Union counties. Three judges, each elected districtwide from a “Place.”

Place 1 (from Calhoun, Chickasaw, Lafayette or Union): Andrew K. Howorth, incumbent

Place 2 (from Benton, Marshall or Tippah): Robert W. Elliott, incumbent

Place 3 (from any county in the district): Tom Levidiotis

DISTRICT 16 – Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee, Oktibbeha counties. Three judges, elected districtwide from a “Place.”

Place 1 (from Lowndes): James T. “Jim” Kitchens, incumbent

Place 2 (from Oktibbeha): Lee J. Howard, incumbent

Place 3 (from Clay or Noxubee): Lee S. Coleman, incumbent

COURT OF APPEALS

District 1 (North Mississippi from DeSoto to Tishomingo, south to Webster and Choctaw) – Both seats are up for election.

Place 2 – Donna M. Barnes, incumbent.

District 3 (East-central from Clay to Hinds and north Wayne) – No seats are up for election.

STATE SUPREME COURT

No North Mississippi seats up for election.
