JACKSON - State Sen. Alan Nunnelee of Tupelo filed qualifying papers Tuesday to be a Republican candidate for U.S. Congress.

For months, the Senate Appropriations Committee chairman has said he'd seek the GOP nomination in hopes of meeting incumbent Democrat Rep. Travis Childers of Booneville in the November general election.

In announcing he'd qualified, Nunnelee said America needs a change in Washington, where Democrats control the White House and both houses of Congress.

"The current leadership in Washington is making decisions that will create untold consequences for our country," he said in a news release. "I'm running for Congress because we need a congressman who will stand up for Mississippi values in Washington."

When I first heard about him running for Congress (what seems like a year ago), I was excited. As the year has progressed, I am not sure he has what it takes to unseat a Congressman. He certaintly is not captivating. Good luck to him though, someone needs to try and knock off Childers.

I hope the republicans can find someone reputable to run against Nunnellee. He is weak. Billy McCoy ran all over him the last two years in the legislature. And no one in his own party really likes him personally.
